Long Throw Specialist

Surely you can get some suitable candidates from your existing squad and give them special training and gym work.

I can't believe it is an innate skill. It must be having the right muscles developed and practice.

It’s not something that you can really teach. I used to play alongside a guy that was about 5’ 8” who wasn’t particularly athletic or muscular but could throw the ball long and flat for what seemed like huge distance .  He didn’t practice - it was an innate skill.

Ok, people will have different aptitudes to start with but it is really down mechanics of the body and developing the right muscles.

It is easiest to start with those who are already better at it and you don't want to include centre backs or big forwards.

True that some people instinctively can throw it miles, but regarding improving it with practice, Liverpool's throw-in coach begs to differ...

“I’ve coached a lot of players who have improved the length of their throws with the help of technical training. When I started working with Kian Hansen [now of Nordsjælland], he could throw 30 metres, which is pretty far, but the throw was very high and easy to defend against. He ultimately reached 36.7 metres but throwing at incredible speed. I believe he assisted every one of the 35 goals that FC Midtjylland scored after throw-ins in the next four seasons.

“A completely different case is Andy Robertson from Liverpool, who couldn’t throw past 19 metres when I met him. That is very, very short, and when you throw that short, it’s very, very easy to put that throw under pressure. He managed to extend his throw by nearly eight metres. And although he’ll never have the longest throw, with training we’ve managed to improve the radius of his throw-in by more than 500 square metres."

Paterson has a reasonable throw on him. I think it's a tactical choice not to use it.

That said, for many years we've not been very good at throw ins, struggle to throw it a few feet to our own players, never mind further

Reminds me of our corners and free kicks.

Pretty sure we had a long throw specialist in 2011/12 under Megson. Seem to remember quite a few goals direct from throw ins. Think we even narrowed the pitch to suit.

At various points that season we had Ben Marshall, Julian Bennett and Michail Antonio who all had a decent throw.
