Matt could leave and we wouldn't get a Penney for him

We had to offer him at least the same terms as his previous contract in order to qualify for compensation.

And his previous contract was for a ridiculous salary for an unproven player. This is a problem with young players because of the ability of richer clubs to take a punt on unproven players with potential.

Matt had a few good games and some fans demanded we offer him a fortune to stop Chelsea or Arsenal stealing him from us. The club gave him an absurd contract and it turns out he's not the next big thing after all. I think that, psychologically, young players lose their impetus when awarded riches too young.

Biggest example is George Hirst. Of course he had potential but we offered him the best contract ever to a young player and he still left. Some fans still say we should have offered him more but, although the club handled it poorly (as they do nearly everything), they appear to have been correct in this instance. He's now over 22 and still hasn't scored a goal at any level in senior English football. I don't think he's even played and completed a full game. He's made some money so good luck to him.

SWFC are being run appallingly but paying fortunes to young players is not the answer.

Do you think we should have offered Penney a new deal, on at least what he was on previously, when the current manager seemingly doesn't rate him?

Which young players who we let go have gone on to have a stellar career ?    In fact, the only player from our academy to have a decent career in the last 10 years is Liam Palmer.   Our record is awful, and made worse by United constantly finding gems.

don't think anyone buys the Star any more. As I understand its down to about 7500 sales across the region. The Donny Star was cut as it was down to 250 copies a day.

We were never doing that had we no intention of keeping him then.  Probably been lucky to get 100k compo anyway.

Even if it was (it isn’t) their absolute total worst efforts would still be more of a valuable accurate read than THAT ridiculous diatribe

Except we would have had to offer him at least what he was on last season in order to trigger a compensation fee  -in which case he would likely have accepted as it has been suggested he was on a decent wage - in which case we would not have received compensation as he would have stayed with us and the manager would have a player that he had no interest in picking.

On £3,900 a week to lose £400,000.

Peanuts. Less £5,000 we pay for replacement, a week.

If  Ipswich rate him, Daz does too. Skint.

Yeah, 'Daz' rates him so highly he gave him zero minutes game time in our last 12 matches.

If we offer £3,900 a week to a player the manager never picks then its £3,900 a week wasted isn't it?

Not if you sell for £400,000 and gotta pay £5 grand to replace, if embargo ever goes, on weekly wage.

Daz may have been constrained by contract clauses, example trigger to extend deal , etc .Like Madine.

Celtic Manor £100 ,000 hotel bill a bigger waste.

So Moore didn't pick Penney as it might trigger an extended deal but you think he wanted to keep him?

You don't half talk some rubbish.

If he kept Penney - and continued not to pick him - then he would have to spend another wage on a player to do that job anyway.

and why would anyone be surprised?

We said we didnt want him anymore.

Another player I have been wrong about...thought he was going to be a regular for us

Maybe a tad harsh, but as a left back he's a bit of a show pony, technically good with quick feet and can cross. Though his defensive positioning and awerness let him down.

Will be a really good signing at this level to a top six side that plays attacking football with width.

Which is probably one of the reasons he's struggled here with the dour defensive and at times badly played hoofball we've been playing the last few seasons. Would maybe be a regular if he'd have been a few years older In that first year under Carlos when we played open expansive football.

That's presuming they'd want to pay money for an unproven player. He's not exactly 19 anymore. He should be a regular somewhere by now

If we gave a contract, it's more likely no one would want to pay for him so it is wasted wages

DC has made many mistakes regarding players and contracts, but this isn't one of them
