So Long, and Thanks for All the Tunafish

Recommended Posts

I'm feeling pretty flouncy today. Last night felt like being stabbed in the gut, I've never felt so emotional at a football match. 17 years since we last saw top flight football and yet it is so much more painful when it's that close. That said, I'll pick myself up like the rest of the Wednesdayites and not make a pathetic attention seeking post on a public forum.

So that’s that then, the season is over and my Sheffield Wednesday odyssey of 29 years has come to an end. I simply can’t justify the cost of 2 season tickets anymore as year 7 of austerity bites watching live football has changed from being a way of life in to an expensive luxury that we can no longer justify. I certainly can’t get my head around the crazy pricing on the day and a membership price is excessive for what it is. The uncertainty of the Wednesdayite car park also plays a part and although I understand the majority of the posters on here live in Sheffield and can’t see the problem with it vanishing I can assure you when you’re traveling a distances the uncertainty of a parking spot becomes a problem.

For me and the missus Mr Chansiri becoming chairman has been a double edged sword, yes he is striving for the success we all crave as fans but at what cost? I’m not sure he understands the local or even the wider economy and appears to think everyone has cash coming out of their ears. Sheffield Wednesday are one of the most expensive teams to watch outside of the Premiership, however I am not stupid enough to think the club is a charity and therefore as a business if you are paying your employees obscene wages you have to recoup the cost one way or another. That said it isn’t effecting the crowds and nothing would make me happier than Wednesday one day going from strength to strength in the Premier League so I’d like to wish Mr Chansiri all the best for his stewardship of the club.

I am not going from an active fan to an armchair one, I would feel like a hypocrite, I’d rather give it up until hopefully one day I can return to actively support the club I love. Me and the missus will really miss our blue plastic seats but we hope the new residents of them have an absolute blast as the club continues to move forwards. We will miss being in Hillsborough and being a part of something so special.

Anyway Owl Stalkers thanks for all the highs, lows, laughs, frustrations, positive and negative reactions, see you around and good wishes to each and every one of you for the future.

I get not everyone can afford a season ticket but the price of them is not actually that bad.

As for membership... well it pays for itself if you attend regularly.

Re the parking, I don't know your circs but there are other options. We never use the car park & always park on one particular road which isn't too far. But if you prefer car parks there is the Marlin Bridge park & ride for just £1. It's 5 mins from Hillsborough centre & the Tap & Rawson Springs.

I'm disappointed with last night like everyone but right now I can't wait to see who we sign and will get season tickets for us when I get paid this month. I'll then be looking forward to some new grounds to visit and 2 derbies (probably 1 given how hard it will be to get a ticket for their place). 6th then 4th and this year 1st or 2nd - we have a great chairman, good players and a great manager/ coach, so why not.   And if not then watching the Owls is a way of life for me (like many others) and I'll keep rolling with the highs and lows.

The car park thing is ridiculous. My dad has been driving to most games about 40 years and we've never once failed to find somewhere to park for free.

I don't know I am getting there earlier and parking further away each time - round Claywheels Lane area. There were loads parked well up the back road to Foxhill and a load near the church just down from the pub and around the corner which I hadn't seen before. Take away the Wednesdayite car park and that is another 600 cars to find space for and our disabled supporters are simply going to struggle to get close by.

Fair enough I'll take the disabled supporters point. And to be fair I didn't know it held 600 cars.

So you feel like that you're that special that you need to tell the world that you and your wife doesn't want to support Wednesday anymore because you think it's too expensive?

Was you expecting me to shed a tear or something? ...I don't quite get what you want ? Sympathy? A donation perhaps ?

One question to you is if we would have gone up would you have posted this ?

Your seat will be filled and no one will know who you was .

You can't "Justify it"..?...................Now fair enough mate if you can't afford it...Ive been there and no doubt could be there again...but i have never been able to not  "Justify" following Sheffield Wednesday.

I have been in the same position as you, not being able to afford 2 season tickets...The wife knew how much it meant to me, so she has foregone having one for 5 years...

She was in bits last night..cos shes a Wednesday fan....but never have I been unable to not "Justify" following the club, even if it meant just getting to the odd game.

What you are REALLY saying is...The fights gone out of you, which is fair enough, everyone has a tipping point, but tell it like it is...if you are gonna make a statement.

PARKING???...Please do me a favour...I have never paid to bloody park in over 50 years of going....Middlewood rd..Langsett avenue Wadsley lane...side roads all, over the sodding place within a 10 minute walk of the sodding ground!...I have been to every sell out game in the last god knows how many years and ALWAYS parked...for nowt

Sentimental twaddle mate....I have all the sympathy in the world for Owls fans who can't afford it, its my main gripe with Chansiri...that and the kit...but theres a f.ookin' difference between being unable to "afford" it, and being unable to "justify" it......the former i have the utmost sympathy with...the latter.... I simply don't understand

I've been going 25 years and parked in the same place all those years.  Never used the Wednesdayite car park.

Granted tickets aren't cheap but I make sure I save the money for Sts because it's in my blood.

I do a 70 mile round trip too so I'm far from local.

Just not bothered...

Because its the only way they can sell tickets.  It's as simple as that.

Not even close to topping Bodhidrhrama's flounce post of 2014. Poor effort.

29 years, if your travelling from out of Sheffield how much has your travel costs gone up? I really am fed up of people moaning about ticket prices, I've a friend who works part time and lives on his own with no extra income, he's a season ticket holder on the north. If you wanted to come you'd come, stop making excuses.

Dramatic.

class comments here folks, somebody of 29 years a fan been priced out and you react with comments like that. Sometimes its the little things that just push you over the edge. Yeah the parking sounds drastic but if its the price for him and his mrs then the extra expense of getting here then you do whats right for your family not swfc. SWFC will never do anything to support you as people

Just seemed a bit overdramatic.  Pricing is a bane for supporters across most championship clubs - how to invest in a promotion calibre squad and pay the going rate for good players?  What do you expect the chairman to do here?

And the moan about parking was ridiculous.  Imo of course.

true,I was just letting people know the cost of a Huddersfield season ticket.who apparently have the same budget as Rotherham.

To be fair our season tickets in my opinion are a fair price.

this chairman doesn't care about the economics of the working people of this part of the country.

Unfortunately that wont change, and whilst he's making smart jokes at his hand picked steering group meetings with happy clappers he will just do as he likes. I truly feel we haven't seen the ruthless side of this fella yet

I must say, it is all about priorities. Sure football is more expensive now, but that's life. The cost of a season ticket is still a fraction of a working person's average spare cash, and if it meant that much to you then you'd give up some other luxuries in order to follow your team. It took me 10 months to pay off my ticket, and I had to watch my money each month to make sure there was enough to cover it, but I did that because that's how I want to spend my cash, watching the team I love. Obviously football doesn't mean that much to you mate, that's the truth of the matter. Don't blame the chairman because you've priced yourself out in your head.
