Swiss Toni
My only concern is we have hope and drenthe on loan and stu doesn't seem to rate them enough to put them in the starting 11 every week. Now we have GTF. We need players who can come in and play in the starting 11. Funds are limited so surely we shouldn't be filling our loan slots with subs. Hope was brought in under the youth loan system so I didn't expect to see him start many games. As for Drenthe and probably GTF too, I think the problem is they weren't playing games for their relative clubs and therefore need(ed) time to build up their fitness. I doubt that either were Gray's first choice additions and therefore he's got to be 100% confident before putting them in the first team. I'm not defending his decision not to start them, just adding a bit of clarity.

Freshfish
..it's October and we are comfortably in mid-table. Some good results, some mediocre ones and really only one 'drubbing' from the team sat at the top of the league. We have a smaller budget than those clubs with 'stupidly rich' owners and those with parachute payments. We've been on 'hold' because of a take-over process that failed due to circumstances out of the clubs control. We've had key injuries in a squad that is pretty small....and yet folk are still moaning about 'boring' football. I used to sit and watch boring football under Big Jack and Wilkinson but it was done in order to not be beaten and grind out results. This is a tough league and relegation would be a disaster. Now how about being bloody happy about where we are now in contrast to this time last year. Some folk need to realise if they want that sort of 'attractive football' then they're 'supporting' the wrong club in our current position. Guest PAUL.
as i said he is not without criticism however Paul just look at your post and try to work out yourself why we had several players not just those lined up then when the takeover stalled so did the list of players and we resort to aldi again - " surely down to the manager" ?[/quote Not SG's fault for the takeover collapse. I felt for the bloke, especially with some of the players he had lined up to sign AND some who opted for other clubs after getting fed up of waiting for the T/O to go thro'. My point was, even tho' we had to go Aldi shopping, a central midfielder who could make things happen should still have been top priority. There should have been one in preference to May with the Antonio money. Again, in my opinion, we sold Danny Mayor for peanuts to Bury without giving him time to develop and he's no worse than what we have, yet we blew our pot on May,who also needs time to develop yet we play him every game........... CrosbyKitchens
Do you honestly think SG wanted drenthe, hope and gtf? He's shopping in flipping aldo.
Eightace
I like stu I don't think he's anywhere near getting sacked but there's no point bringing in aldi players. May as well make do and wait for the 10% off weekend at Morrisons. We have average back up, no point paying for average backup.
Miffed
Posted this in another thread but I think its also relevant here... We have one player who can take a long throw ( Helan) Other than that our throw-ins are predictable, take a short one and pass it back to the taker. Crossing is embarrassing. Corners are dreadful. Positioning from the strikers isn't great. No one covers back when a full back goes forward. We have one style of attacking play. These are all things that can be addressed on the training ground, not with money. We all know the budget constraints, but why isn't he getting more out of the squad we have. Its the bloody basics that are so glaringly wrong, and if he's such a good coach why can't he fix some of the above before moaning about money? adelphi1867
You can always tell when the clocks go back, Wednesday fans begin to call for the manager to be sacked, it's like listening for the 1st cuckoo of spring.

Maybe you're missing the point, perhaps we're just playing to our strengths. Those very tactics have produced one of the meanest defensive units in the division, a far cry from last season. I don't doubt that we've lost some of our potency going forward, but that may have more to do with the personnel he has at his disposal. Last season, he was able to call on Antonio, Wickham and Fryatt. This year his options are severely reduced since Milan decided to pull the plug. I think he's doing a pretty decent job with the pieces he's been left with. In fact, I'd rather him go back to five across the middle and make us even harder to break down. It just gave us more control of games, and was certainly something we could have built on. Compromising by playing two substandard attackers does little other than weaken the midfield. It hardly makes us any more threatening

till_i_die
There's a lot of people on Owlstalk that say, if we'd had fair refs all season, we'd be around the top of the league. The same people also say we've got an awful squad completely lacking in quality in several positions. They elaborate on this by slagging off MM for not backing Gray with funds. They also then say that Gray should be sacked when we're currently in a comfortable mid-table position. Fickle football fans at their best. cowl
Away form is generally good, home form is generally poor. We were quite useful away, and patchy at home under Gray last season too so I'd say it's this home form that is the biggest concern over Gray that I have. Away from home he seems to know very well how to set us up to get victories and avoid defeats, but at home he just hasn't really found a formula yet. Still, to mitigate somewhat for our home form this season, it's worth pointing out that we haven't played a team at home yet this season that wasn't above us in the table at the time of playing them, and this will still be true by the time we play our next opponents at home, Bournemouth. Given that fact, I suppose we haven't done so shockingly bad against them. We should still have done much better though; Millwall and Ipswich were dropped points, Forest should have been a draw, and Derby especially, but also last week against Norwich I think we could have got wins. We just don't score, or look like scoring at home though. Strangely, having misfiring strikers seems to be a bigger problem for us at home than away
