"Attack wins you games, defence wins you titles"

I will take 1-0 wins all season.

Keegan's Newcastle played better football, his sides let a lot of goals in, Ferguson's Man U never played bad football though so the lesson there is you can play good football and still have a regimented defence - the defence starting in attack.

Gray follows this type of football, probably not even giving Alex Ferguson's style a second thought, just his viewpoint on the game.

What i'd like to know though, could Gray work with a type of player like Waddle, or Sheridan?  Kinds of players that are world beaters but who won't put the work in defensively anything other than on the odd occasion?   That is what would make him a top flight manager, and I hope we get to find out one day soon.

Oh really?

1993/4 : conceded 41 goals in 42 games, 5th best in Premier League and only 3 more than Manchester United who won the title.

1994/5 : conceded 47 goals in 42 games, 6th best in Premier League.

1995/6 : conceded 37 goals in 38 games, 5th best in Premier League and only 2 more than Manchester United who won the title.

1996/7 : conceded 40 goals in 38 games, 4th best in Premier League and 4 LESS than Manchester United who won the title.

(Keegan left the club in January 1997)

Does 165 goals against in 160 games really represent a side that 'let a lot of goals in' ? That's the trouble with clichés and accepted wisdom - they often paint a picture that is convenient rather than one that is factual.

The basis of ALL great teams is a great defence.

Remember the Liverpool team only conceding I think 16 in a season.

1-0 to the Arsenal.

Man Utd had best part of two decades with top goalies, class CBs and very capable FBs.

Chelski built the defence first.

Obviously winning games is the aim, but conceding none or one is the platform that allows you to do it.
