Guest Swindon on Tour
Swindon fan in peace here....firstly posted on the matchday thread as I know it probably gets to most coverage. Where do I start ....... Started following my beloved Swindon in 74/75 season and my first ever game was home against Wednesday (Eric Potts for you olden's scored). You never forget your first :) Wednesday scored first and led HT 0-1 however Swindon scored 2 second half and went on to win 2-1. Getting to my point that day I stood in with the away fans, not thousands that you have brought down many times since but a very vocal following. I have to give it to you that it probably changed my life. I had been to a few professional games before but I was hooked on the atmosphere however to this day remember a fan lifted on shoulders and a song that stuck in my mind for years :) Couple of seasons later whilst on holiday with family I watched Grimsby v Wednesday in league cup first ground, first leg You won 3-0. Once again the chorus of Sammy, with scarf around wrist caught my attention. However it was the last encounter that made me post on your forum as a one man pitch invasion from the away end was watched in disbelief and a fan sank to his knees in front of a Wednesday player. I recall "Sammy is our leader" coming from the away end and then I realised there he was again but this time he was led past the Town End (the home end that became my home) it was him. The spit and coins rained down on this "figure" escorted by 2 coppers. He looked up and just smiled at the Swindon lot but it was met with astonishment as he looked "different" no wee wee taking but you will know what I mean. For years I wondered what happened as he never came back after that. Sunday just gone my Cousin (big Town fan) married a Wednesdayite and the Wednesday band turned up as guests. Luckily in the bar I met up and it was a chance to ask about Sammy. "We would walk a million miles to see one of your smiles" came the reply. Better still a Facebook and picture was displayed after we got the wifi connected. Sadly I understand he no longer goes but so happy the legend and the one Supporter who helped me fall in love with football was found. This prompted my post. So I send my sincere best wishes to you all and my regards to Sammy who in my eyes was a legend. You fans in the 70' and 80's made watching lower league football fantastic. A credit to what football supporters were about. You travelled well. Remember Motd when Terry Curran scored and you went up. I was there. Best of luck this season and I hope our paths will meet again. I doubt for a while unless we play you in a cup. Who knows Sammy may make a return. "We would walk a million miles to see one of your smiles ooohhh Sammy......." Football then was better and miss the terraces. Sorry for the long post. I feel I can now rest as unfinished business is now complete 1,600 Swindon games later.

WayneTheOwl
Nice story but the fact that the "Wednesday Band" turned up at a wedding must have left a sour taste in the mouth of every normal guest at that wedding.

Guest mkowl
Sammy was scary when i was a young un stood on the Lepp End. Always came in a bit late and the rendition started as he stood on the barriers. Legend was he had acid thrown in his face on the Stretford End - but may be urban myth Did the band do " De de de da flippinguseless" when the groom tried to consumate the marriage

Guest Swindon on Tour
Would you mind. We are in the middle of a crisis here. Crisis ..... flipping hell. You have nothing to worry about. You want to come down here with boardroom battles, no money, no squad. Still better than the premiership :)

I was there as well, Bob Bolder also saved a penalty if I remember right. Thing I do remember most was getting bitten by a coppers alsation whilst asking for directions to train station after game. I feel I can now rest as unfinished business is now complete 1,600 Swindon games later. Sammy was a bit of a mascot for the fans back in the day. I think most people considered him to be a harmless half-wit who was just adopted by "the mob" in the way that lots of communities cherish defenceless people. The sight of Sammy always caused comment and amusement for most of us but he seemed to slip off the radar around the time that we started to improve at the end of the seventies. However, his life since has been reported on this site and you could probably locate the posts with a bit of judicial searching. Nowadays I sometimes think of him when I see the character Sam Dingle (oops, folks) if I am ever unfortunate enough to wake up during "Emmerdale". I think many clubs have their "Sammy" and the poor bugger probably thought he was something special at the match, doubtless to be ignored and forgotten by most everyone in between matches. From what I read from people who said they know/knew him, you probably wouldn't really want to spend that much time with him - not sure about that, really, though. Many thanks for your and and interesting post.
