The only thing he's done well is sign good players, which any manager with a decent budget could do. In no way has he deserved to reap the riches of the Mandaric era. It goes without saying that the good players he sign go on to collapse in dour Irvine displays more often than not. He has since been given funds to add 4 more players with possibly 2 more on the way. So by his admission this is not good enough and there can only be one man to blame, the manager(i use the word manager loosely).
