Where do we need to strengthen in January?

Really do think we need to bring some pace into the Defence.

I really do think we need some competition at full backs and we need to bring in NATURAL full backs.

It would be nice to have someone push Semi for the right back position. (shame we never kept Simek)

As for left back i really like Jones but i think he is more of a winger than a left back(did brilliant at RB yesterday tho), Spurr is ok there, does get caught out of position a lot - would really like that area to be improved.

Buxton needs to play at CB - forget RB...far, far better player at CB.

Another centre half to play alongside Purse (yes Purse) and quick forward player who can play on the wings or up front. We only have JJ and he still has dodgy radar - we can now afford to buy the real deal...

I think our squad is good apart from that. Unless we start shipping players out then I think we only need two players.

If we were to start changing players then Miller and Coke are the only two midfield players I think are good enough for a top Championship side (which is where we have to aim for).

I'd put whatever Tudgay money we're getting towards Le Fondre. A bid of 500k with a clause or too would be more than enough to force them to sell, and he'd absolutely jump at the chance to come here.

Other than that, shore up the defence with a specialist right back and a commanding centre half on loan.

Squad is in great shape, not going to require much to get us over the line.

Ideally I'd like:

1. A Centre Back - a Purse/Coughlan-esque character, someone with some strength and leadership qualities but a few years younger and less error prone. Question mark over Beevers as well as he's been erratic this season, but then there's the option of moving Buxton inside (imo his best position) once both he and Otsemobor are fit.

2. A Central Midfielder - in theory all 4 of our current crop are good enough for this division, but no combination has consistently dominated games. Numbers-wise we're okay though so probably need to move one on (O'Connor afaic) before bringing someone in.

3. A Winger - we lack options, especially if JJ is going to be used up front more often. I'd like one with a left foot (Teale would be better on the right imo), especially since Irvine doesn't seem interested in using Jones on the wing even when he picks Spurr ahead of him.

4. A Striker - very happy with Mellor, Morrison & Heffernan so not a massive priority, but a 4th option for purposes of squad depth would not go amiss. Someone with lightning pace ideally.

Strengthening in midfield the priority for me - which would free Johnson up as an option up front, so if we can only bring in 3 then the striker would be the one I'd forget about.

I think our centre back solution is staring us in the face, Spurr would be an excellent footballing centre back. Yes its been a while since he played there but I remember thinking he looked very accomplished in that position. We could then settle in Jones at left back where his pace would give us an attacking outlet going outside the right footed Teale.

This.

I'd love to poach Le Fondre from the Millers. It would be a no-brainer for the player too; he'd get to play in a real stadium infront of big crowds (compare our attendances to those that his previous clubs get) and he wouldn't even need to move house

New cb to replace Purse unless Buxton is to come in and take his posistion.

A defensive midfielder who can break up play allowing coke/miller to be more attack minded. Someone LIKE sean derry as we wont get him .

A winger who can attack as well as defend.

A young striker such as fryatt as a problem up front is the 3 strikers are in there late 20s to early 30s.

Agree we need more pace in the squad so with that in mind what about a swap Tudgay for Tyson? He's lost his way a bit at Forest but his pace and directness would be an asset at this level. Lets face it Forest are not flush with money so we wouldn't see a lot for Tudgay and its not like we have a pressing need for cash is it? Could be a good deal for all concerned.

Good thought. He is rapid and a left pegger. Was on fire a couple of years ago. Only doubt is that he seems to be a bit weak at times and a bit injury prone.

Don't know if anyone can remember or not but we were set to sign him when Paul Sturrock was in charge but Tyson opted against it as he didn't like Sturrock.

Agree with contributions that Centre Back is our greatest need.

Before you all blow my Madjid Boughera ship out of the water just listen to my reasoning.

1) Boughera always said he would like to come back to Hillsborough and play for us again.

2) Boughera's aspirations of playing in the premiership are severely limited in terms of him getting a conventional move.

3) Wednesday offer Boughera a genuine opportunity to display his wares in the premiership within 3 years.

4) The respect from Owls fans to Boughera would be massive whereas the whole Rangers tribe see their team as being a cheap & 2nd class option.

5) If spelled out in correct terms could Boughera be able to resist being at the head of the Manderic Wednesday Vanguard.

6) Seal The Deal : promotion this year with all the frills, we'll build a Championship team around Boughera next year.

What do you think ? Is it possible........I think so !

Bougherra is probably on £20k per week at Rangers, playing in front of 50k every other week. The comment about him wanting to come back to Hillsborough probably stems from his agent, who has spent the last 5 years trying to flog him on every 3 weeks.

Furthermore, is this the same Bougherra that effectively went on strike in order to engineer a move to Charlton.

There is absolutely no chance of us signing Bougherra. Even with Mandarics money, we are still in league 1, and we are shopping in the loan market, Premiership reserve kids, and the not wanted from Championship clubs.

For me cb wants leaving until the summer along with the rb situation for me tying up mellor along with someone to provide competition on the left are 2 key things the main one though is Le fondre lets go out a and make a statement that we mean business for me buying le fondre would almost guarantee promotion.

are we starting a fourth division side...?...every other week at best he kicks it straight at the keeper...and the keeper lets it in...

Well said - I think this sums it up.

Don't see why people want us to spend over half a million on Le Fondre - he wouldn't get a game! I think a left footed JJ would be ideal - someone who can play on the left or up front if needed.

I don't think we need to spend money on anybody unless the opportunity presents itself to bring in a quality player for a decent fee who can also play at Championship level. If all we're doing is wanting players who can get us over the line and out of this league then a shrewd loan or two will suffice.

As for positions, probably a centre back is the most crucial position. Before Saturday I would have said another winger but I was thoroughly impressed with the work Jones put in going forward and wouldn't hesitate to suggest he be used should anything happen to JJ, Sedgwick or Teale.
