Look at this photo... Is this a penalty ?

As someone said previously the Ref was badly let down by the linesman, if you do a slow mo of the clip above (  7 sec ) you can see a Hudds player in between the Ref and the ball, also you can see the ball about 5 ft past the tackle and Maguire is still virtually upright .

It was obvious at the time..But it seems that it all goes on if the ref likes the way the player falls down.

Think you're pretty near the money with your assessment.

Sadly, so many players cheat, the ref's have a very hard job to do

and don't have the benefit of TV replays or photos in the paper

the next day

Which is exactly why we need instant replays to take game changing calls away from inept refs.

They show week in, week out that they're not up to speed with the modern game

So let's get up to date and help these rubbish refs out.

I suppose what Maguire should have done is stay on his feet, ride the scything tackle when the defender was no where near the ball.

That's exactly what he & every player should try & do, the sooner players get it that falling down on purpose, play acting, trying to get players booked/sent off etc is ruining the game the better...ffs I've played football for 50 years & never once fell down on purpose, never even thought about doing it.

Some interesting comments from Howard Webb on MNF about diving - says that to give a yellow card the ref has to be certain that it was a dive, if they don't think it was a foul they have the option to just play on, i.e. a player can go down in the box but not necessarily be automatically yellow carded for simulation.

There's no way that Graham Salisbury could be certain that Maguire dived - he bottled giving the penalty and to try and justify his decision he gave a yellow card as well.

Salisbury is a terrible ref. He was also the ref for the Forest game...and he was equally sh*t on that occasion.

We all keep saying it, but its time something was done about it. Don't mind refs making mistakes, they have a split second to make a decision at the end of the day. But there's too many obvious decisions not being made, and far too much inconsistancy during games.

he waited so long i think he was giving the initiative to the linesman which never came or he didnt think it was a penalty

Think we need replays for stuff like this, perhaps a quota of 1 each half per team

Fair enough that he looks to see if the linesman gives a penalty or not, but he should have consulted with the linesman if he thought it was a dive when he (the linesman) obviously had a better view. A discussion between the two and they may have decided it was a pen.
