we decided not to go

been to enough of these games to know

people wont agree with me but id scrap the league cup.  no championship team will win it and there's no prestige in getting to the quarters.

what id do, is this, kick the prem teams out of it, scrap the johnstone paint cup and then have the league cup played out between championship, league 1 & league 2 teams.

People are talking like it's a given, what if we lose on Saturday? How does that make last night's team selection look?

Does anyone know what will happen Saturday?

This is football, but more significantly it’s the Championship.

Predictable it is not.

Great idea that. The gap between the top premier league clubs and the rest of the football league is too big now, a reputable competition without them would be welcome. It’d also probably do the FA Cup a favour

Then the next one will be...

Can just see Stocksbridge Park Steels v 2nd position in Serie A in European Cup soon.

I struggle to believe that we have so many poor players and old players to be able to field a team capable of holding or beating Everton at home in a cup game? The whole thing about these cup competitions is the possibility of the underdog coming out on top and it should not really shock everybody too much every time non-league or lower league teams manage to beat a team from a higher division. On paper the Tottenham team that turned out against Colchester should have absolutely wiped the floor with them and with the majority of statistics they did exactly that, 19 goal attempts to 4, 31 crosses to 3, 6 set pieces to 1, 40% of the play in Colchesters home third, but the blocks, interceptions tackles, misses were all in Colchester's favour and the only important stat of the night was the zero goals against. That kind of play from Colchester comes about with hard work and good organisation, whereas our game against Everton looked like 11 strangers thrown together to have a kicjk around and see how it goes. There were no special tactics employed, which was evident by the distinct lack of technical area participation from Monk and the complete lack of co-ordination between our defenders early on and on and off throughout the game.

As for resting our older players for the league games, I would rather rest some of them for the next league game, because nobody this season is really having a blinder apart from Borner, but some of our first team players could have had the chance to show us how good they really are against better class opposition. The four oldest players on the pitch in the Tottenham game, all played for Colchester, 2 x 28 year olds, a 31 yr old and a 34 yr old, so maybe we lacked experience the other night?

The only part of the team that remained the same as in our recent league games was the right hand side of our defence, which was exposed so easily yet again as an absolute shambles. If any experimentation was required, it would have been an ideal opportunity to try something different back there. Ash Baker, Palmer, Iorfa, or Lee at right back maybe and maybe Hutch at right side centre half? Anyway the opportunity was wasted and our cobbled together team rarely looked passionate enough or good enough to worry Everton at all.

Good decision by Monk. I'd rather take 3pts on sat'dy.

True but it's whether we do get 3 points , if we don't get something there surely the 8 changes made in the cup will make the wholesale changes seem like a failure as we'd have lost both games!

Or teams in European competitions shouldn’t take part. It would help them with their own fixture congestion and ensure the big 6 clubs at the time aren’t in the league cup.

Or have a PL league cup and put the championship clubs into the Johnstone’s paint trophy or whatever it’s called now

Agree with this but maybe the European clubs could play their under 23 sides as they do in the Johnstone paint trophy thing. Either way, it tends to be Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City or arsenal in the final of cups every year. Yawn

We rested players on Tuesday to give us a better chance of winning on Saturday. If we lose at Boro then it will show that even with a rest our first team isn’t that great. In my opinion. But hopefully we win and Monk will be justified

Just seen his chances against Everton

Whilst he has missed them, he's at least getting into the positions and has looked livelier and sharper last few games

Rhodes hasn't even been anywhere near the chances when he's been on

Need to stick with him and keep giving Winnall game time
