Table Gazers thread 2015/16 season

This should be read whilst table gazing in my opinion (yes this is not the first time posted but it took me some time to write so rounduns to any haters):

Season review so far

Goalkeepers

Despite getting injured in the second game of the season, Westwood has remained first choice keeper, keeping 3 clean sheets in 830 minutes. It appears that Price, has effectively been replaced, by Wildsmith as Westwood’s understudy

Defenders

Hunt has earned first choice right back following man of the match performances in the opening two league games, although he has occasionally been rested and covered by Palmer. CC seems to have finally settled on Pudil as first choice left back, pushing Wiggins into the sidelines. Helan, as original left back choice, has found more exposure playing as an attacking winger, making 7 League appearances, 5 of these from the bench

Centre back pairings have orbited around ever-present Lees, who also weighed in with 2 goals. Lees initial partner, Loovens, has recovered to be first choice again, following being substituted through injury against Reading and missing the next 8 games, apart from the 3-1 away defeat to Burnley. Sasso’s run of just 2 full games, filling in for Loovens, failed to materialize into anything more than simply cover before Turner’s arrival from Norwich on a season-long loan. Turner’s playing of every minute from his League debut against Bolton, came to an abrupt halt 5 games later through injury, and the reemergence of Loovens as Lee’s partner

Midfielders

Over the course of the 14 League games to date, it has become clear who CC sees as his best midfield set up. It’s Hutchinson as the destroyer with Bannan and Lee the creators. Although rested 2 times in the League, no player, not even Semedo, has truly challenged the Hutch as midfield anchor. Lopez appears to have succumbed to injury, but his replacement in the form of Bannan has seen a noticeable improvement results-wise (although the latter’s finishing has been atrocious). Lee has emerged as first choice with outstanding consistency and flair, seemingly after McGugan’s absence for his child’s birth, this despite wonder goals (all 3 of them) from the no. 10

Attackers

Hooper’s cameo versus Forest aside, CC prefers to alternate Nuhui and Joao in nearly every game. The former has the most starts and most minutes in play, but both have managed only 2 league goals in 12 league appearances. This contrasts to Forestieri and his 4 goals from 8, making him the teams top scorer at this point. His arrival (debuts were given to Bannan, Forestieri and Pudil in the defeat at Burnley) preceded the current 10-match unbeaten run in League and Cup, and has been a significant contributing factor behind Wednesday’s surge up the league, although the Italian has been cup-tied and not contributed on the pitch to Wednesday’s qualification for the Carling Cup quarter finals. Wallace has remained one of the first names on the proverbial team sheet, starting 11 of the 14 league games so far, with his role hardly threatened. Sougou, has yet to complete a full 90 minutes (and is currently injured), whereas Matias, who burst into the first team on day one, seems to lack the teamwork CC requires and is, in any event, also currently out injured

Summary

A lot has been said about CC’s “rotation policy” but things are not so simple and proof is in action, not talking. The team he set up for the 2-0 win against Bristol City on the opening day of the season is more or less the same as the one that beat Forest at home 1-0, thirteen games later. The exceptions are easily explained: Pudil has established himself as first choice left back after Helan and Wiggins both had their chance and failed; Bannan has come in for Lopez, Lee for McGugan and Forestieri for Matias. Semedo only filled in because Hutchinson was rested. Rotation is actually a myth, thus far

With over a third of the season gone, Wednesday find their selves nicely poised just outside the play-offs. Had refereeing decisions gone our way against Hull and QPR it could be argued that we’d be well within the play off positions - but I wont. On top of Hooper, it will be fascinating who CC/the committee also brings in, and whether he will stick to keeping a consistent first team (resting players here and there) or truly go for universal squad rotation

But for sure this is a new Wednesday side, perhaps the best Wednesday side we have seen at this level for 25 years. Nicking 1-0 wins like we did today is promotion material. Long may it continue!

Looks like a lot of changes gone on there.

Its clear Carlos favours some squad rotation, he's said it countless times already going back through his interviews.

you plussed yourself for that,

Actions are louder than words - he can talk about squad rotations all he wants (and so can you) but he's actually just resting the odd player here and there, except when it comes to Cup games and playing 3 games in 6 days. The stats speak to that, but it's how you define "squad rotation" rather than using a squad with depth

For me, grandstanding about how our manager uses "squad rotation" seems like a rather simplistic, convenient and pretty lazy analysis from punters who believe what they read. If there was real squad rotation in the league, then I'd not expect to see players consistently keep their place for over a third of the season. We don't see this:

Westwood has only been replaced when injured. This is an enforced change, not part of any master plan

Hunt has been rested and covered by Palmer, not exactly unusual for any manager to do, without it being hailed as proof of "rotating squad" masterstroke

Pudil has come in and played almost every game he was available

Lees hasn't missed a minute

Loovens has kept his place since Turner got injured. Turner played every minute from his debut until he was crocked

Hutchinson gets rested for a game when not suspended

Lee has played consistently as has Bannan, who hasn't missed a game since joining and only been subbed once, in the last 10 minutes against Burnley)

Forestieri always plays unless cup-tied

Joao and Nuhui are simply replacing each other

Wallace is same as Pudil, Lee and Bannan

Yet to see any evidence of squad rotation whatever the talk - although, like you, I don't know the future, so whether CC practices what he preaches in the future is to be seen

Thing is though, if you take squad rotation to the extreme regarding its definitition, then obviously that not happening.  Works the same, as going to the extreme thinking that we can play a full regular 11 week in week out.

I'm just  repeating what Carlos has said, I don;t think he's talking bollaks, but that's just me.

I mean how else is he going to keep 30 plus players happy?
