Lets go zonal at corners

Recommended Posts

Normally i would say man for man is the way to go on corners but we are getting absolutely pulled to pieces. QPR and Bristol could have done us several times, Brentford did and had other chances.

We are getting moved around and are stupidly leavng the penalty spot wide open or one on one.

Until we sort it out we need togo zonal marking. Its not ideal but weve been found out and we needto change. Its simpler and would at least make teams think.

So our players struggle to stay with the man they are suppose to be responsible for. How do you think they will do when you take that responsibility away.

Do you know what zonal marking is?

Thats it.

yes but if they cant stay with one man. they will just all look at each other when a man is free for a header.  they will blame each other.

It rarely works well with good defences letalone one like ours.

Normally the penalty box is a crowded mess for corners whIch makes it easier to block , hold or whatever to stop forwards getting a free run or jump.

Brentford seemed to create space and get one on ones as they did with the goal.

The trouble with man to man marking is that the attacking side can dictate who gets into the dangerous areas and on the ball.

Flint was marking their centre half and the centre half stayed way beyond the far post and the ball never went anywhere near them. So Flint didn’t clear any corners.

Meanwhile they isolated Toney on Odubajo at the near post and sent the ball there.

Zonal is horrific.

How about our defenders actually show a desire to defend? Odubajo was pathetic for the goal, Toney wanted the ball, he didn’t, you still have that same scenario in a Zonal system.

Disagree, I thought he was out muscled by a stronger bloke

One man on each post, the two big centre halfs on their big forwards, our “ handy in the air” forwards picking up their “ handy in the air players “ and three others in the area and on their toes should the ball come in their direction. Is that zonal marking ?

Thats how we used to do it with the Dog and Duck X1 and it always seemed to work.

Said exactly the same in another thread.
We clearly can’t man for man defend.
Zonal mark your particular area and attack the ball at its highest point.
Brentford just walked Flint away.
If you look at the goal again most of the penalty box was free space. Looked awful.
Someone on the pitch needs to take responsibility and make those calls.

Its not just Brentford. QPR were setting players up well away from the danger zone and keeping all of our decent headers out of the way.
