Whats Gone Wrong?

Recommended Posts

We had a team that was invincible for the last third of last season. There was an obvious good spirit around the place and a great feeling around the club with players wanting to play for us.

Instead of tweaking the squad and adding a bit of quality here and there we've signed a whole new team and ripped the soul out of last seasons squad. We've changed our captain. We've dropped our talismanic centre-back in Llera. We've also got a few loan players here whose long term futures are obviously not with us, and one of those players I'm not even convinced wants to be here.

We've made some baffling decisions tactically in matches. Some players are being dropped for no apparent reason, while others can't get a look in i.e. Bywater and COGBA despite the players who've replaced them not looking convincing.

We've lost our coach and not replaced him adequately.

We've brought in a new centre back who is no better than Purse and made him Captain meaning that a) his mistakes are magnified b) the rest of the team have a Captain they don't know and c) he's now essentially undroppable because he's DJ's man and he's Captain.

Apart from all that we're fine.

Absolutely nothing to do with getting promotion and regularly facing international and premier class players then?

Defeats to Palace and Huddersfield don't explain that, both teams who have similar squads to our own.

Main difference this season is that oppositions half chances are being converted. That and a few unlucky refereeing decisions which are contributing to the sense that there is a crisis.

Confidence is leeching away match by match and we are now panicking at the front, in the middle and at the back.

The players are better than they are playing.

Nope - most of the players brought in are supposed to be of the same level. Loss of confidence has done us in. Worrying that our new captain for the semedo has handed it back. Lack of leaders and some calamitous performances haven't helped.

Last season we were two divisions above non league, this season we are one division below the Premiership. Thats my definition of the gulf in difference I think everybody has underestimated.

Key players gone or injured.

New signings not cutting it.

Existing players not able to 'step up' a league.

Loss of confidence/winning mentality.

Increase in errors and higher chance of errors being punished.

Bit of bad luck.

Frustration setting in, tactics and formations not working, downward spiral.

Completely agree - but if we were better organised and defended as a unit then we would reduce the number of half chances that sides are getting and take the pressure off our beleaguered defence. Last season we often went one down before bouncing back. Then we were playing sides which did not have the players to press and put the result beyond us - now we are getting punished.
