Guest Triplej2
Brighton in the cup semi in 1983. I was 12 and the defeat made me that ill I had to have a week off school. I was there too, heartbreaking, not unlike the one in 85. Losing in the FA cup semi is so much harder than the final.
punkskaphil
7-1 at Highbury in 1992 was pretty bad. It was my first trip to a 'decent' stadium too, having only previously been to Selhurst Park and the Old Den. And my dad's an Arsenal fan. Losing 4-2 at the Old Den in 1990 after being 2-up at HT, and having most of our defence getting injured. It was my first defeat and I suddenly realised that being a Wednesday fan wasn't going to be all rosy. It was also a bit of a scary ground for an eleven-year-old. DJMortimer
7-1 at Highbury in 1992 was pretty bad. I think that would have to be mine too. A thoroughly boring game for about 70 minutes in the peace and quiet of the Highbury library. Then all hell broke loose... all at one end. The most surreal game I've ever been to and the one where the scoreline was the most utterly unrepresentative of how things had been.

That game was too surreal to be a heartbreaker - if it was a systematice dismantling from minute 1 - like the 8-0 at Newcastle or Boro - or even the 8-2 at Loftus Road then fair enough - but it was like a nothing game in which we probably looked slightly more likely to edge at 70 minutes - then they had six goal attempts and scored 6 goals - and a couple of worldy's in there as well - just a freak
Ian
Wouldn't say it was my worst memory but anyone remember Portsmouth away in the 80's?... we won 1-0 through a megson goal but were on an open end and when I say it pissed it down that's a massive understatement.....I'd gone on the ico which was a train in those days, and it broke down once we got there so rather than take us back to the station they left us in the ground, in the same weeing down rain.....for hours....in the end they felt sorry for us and moved us to their end which had a roof.....and to everyone's amazement was standing because from our end it looked like seats.....they must have all had a specific square to stand in. Once we got back to the train it broke down loads on the way back, god knows what time we got home but I remember walking down the train to the buffet car and seeing everyone sat in next to nothing and clothes hanging up everywhere drying....it was like a Calcutta to Bombay train! Dizzys Dad
Preston in the 70s, night match. Got into a bit of a ruck in their end, Cops moved in and escorted Owls around the perimeter of the pitch. Me and a mate stayed where we were, until some Preston fans started pointing us out. We decided to leg it over the wall to catch the other Owls, who we presumed were being taken to the opposite end. We caught up with them just before the half-way line, only to be marched straight down the tunnel and locked up under the stand.
penrhyn bay owl
wrexham away mid-70s, lost 4-0 while a FA CUP semi final was being played at hillsborough. i remember thinking 'will we ever get to play in big matches at hillsborough' totally agree . it was april 1981 we needed to win this match to stand any chance of promotion and were torn apart by a lad named steve fox left/right winger cant remember which but we were lucky to get 0 .. met my school mate joey jones after the game in the club bar for a few drink's . big jack let the lad's have one beer before kicking their arses onto the team coach we were present when he told the team you dont rumbleing deserve to be in the same room as the fans ...legend

DJMortimer
I remember being thoroughly pissed off with a performance at Crewe a few years ago when Paul Sturrock was manager. It was the one where Glenn Whelan was singled out for a fair amount of abuse from the travelling fans for a hopeless performance. I think it finished 0-3 but it was one of those games where it was clear almost from the outset that a binch of children would have been able to beat us. Where the spirit has been so utterly crushed that you don't even have the energy to be angry. In such a modest setting it was a brutal reality check for a once mighty club. I went to this match with the mates in a minibus. Great result but a horrible wet day. My mate and I nearly got hammered at the end by angry pompey fans. I think we took around a thousand to this match. The exact weekend after, we played Brighton away and won 3-1. Loads more Owls were at this match though. eckingtonblue
Derby 87/88 season, mates let me down and waiting for them i missed the coach. Begged a lift down managed 2hrs in the pub, match went 2-0 down i think and salvaged a 2-2 draw. Couldn't find the coach home (turned out they'd taken a different coach away to what they took to home matches) couldn't work this out at the time though. Walked to the train station, not enough money left and no card on me, 80p short and the fookers wouldn't let me on. Tried hitch hiking back didn't get picked up and ended up walking home. I honestly thought i was gonna die.
Wolfmanjack
Palace away, 1969/70 season. Hitch hiked it as far as Harrow, then got on local trains/tube. There were three of us, all dressed in our hippy gear, and long hair, sat on a tube train, with scores of skins trying to force the doors open to get at us. Skins were the thing in London then, and the aggro we got all day was unbelievable On the way home we stopped off at Watford to see a couple of birds, and got a knife pulled on us in the toilets of a pub, before being told we weren't welcome. Managed to get a lift to Leicester Forest, but weren't allowed in the restaurant cos we had no money, so spent all night in the snow, huddled up on the petrol station forecourt. Finally got another lift, as far as Woodall Services, after about six hours at the petrol station. Walked home from Woodall. To cap it all, we were relegated that season. Worth it? Worth every minute of it, and if I were fourty years younger, I'd do it all again. Small price to pay to watch Wednesday.
Guest gibbonboy
Reading this makes you realise how far detached football supporters these days aged 18 to 20 must be from lads 30 +...some of the stories from the 70's and 80's are awesome. Can't imagine some of the young 'uns sat on a petrol station forecourt in the snow waiting for a lift.

Guest Jodz
Plymouth Away -October 08/09, Coach all way there and back was bad enough, But losing 4-0, being 3-0 down at half time. On comes FJ9, to miss a one on one at the start of the 2nd half to get us back in it, we were awful. It was cold and wet, as if the result wasn't bad enough, you just want to get home after such a game, but 6 hours travelling to come, perfect. Loads more Owls were at this match though. Went to both those, soaked wet through at Pompey, with a broken down train at Havant, barring our way. Just made the midnight connection up north from Kings Cross, which fortunately made an extra stop at Doncaster. Then the problem of getting back to Sheffield from there. Thanks to Bernard (Captn. Birdseye) I managed to cadge a lift home. Following week Brighton, Southern region train strike, meant catching a taxi from Gatwick to Brighton, and same on the return trip. Think we won 4-2 which made up for the inconvenience. Great promotion season though.
Pompeyowl
So many to choose from! Saturday was right up there with the worst. Reading away about two seasons ago. Got outside the ground to buy my ticket at 1600 for a 2000 kick off, then we got thumped 6-0. Swindon away in the FA cup in '04ish. poo atmosphere and lost 4-1. Bumhole Lane last season being 3-0 down at half time. Wanted to top myself. I'm sure there are sooooo many more, but these are the ones that spring to mind off the top of my head.
