Monday Tribute - Owls Paralympic Star + Respect to Lee Rigby

Recommended Posts

A good mate of mine Mick Brennan will be visiting Hillsborough on Monday as a guest of the club (thanks to Trevor Braithwait).

A huge Wednesdayite since boyhood, he was almost killed serving our country in Iraq in 2004 where he lost both legs and suffered brain damage at the hands of a suicide bomber. Since he woke up from a coma he's been an inspiration. Having just returned from the Winter Paralympics he secured 2 top 10 finishes. Not bad considering he was out for most of the previous year with a broken sternum and only started skiing a few years ago.

No sympathy required, but please give him a hand at half time when together with Corporal Lee Rigby's mother, he makes the half time draw.

In very different but equally similar ways Mick and Lee deserved to be acknowledged.

No sympathy needed, but please show your appreciation.

Saw him on Look North last week ................ what an inspiration to us all .

Sheffield Wednesday are proud to launch a unique partnership in memory of late soldier, Fusilier Lee Rigby.

The affiliation, ‘Team Lee Rigby United Forces’, will offer help and support emotionally, socially and financially to Armed Forces’ families who have suffered bereavement.

In addition, it will aid the millions who have served or are currently serving in the Forces and their dependents.

Lee’s mother Lyn Rigby and her family will be special guests of the club for the Easter Monday home game against Charlton Athletic.

Lyn will be conducting the half time 50/50 draw and will be joined on the pitch by another VIP for the day, Paralympic Team GB skier and lifelong Wednesdayite Mick Brennen.

Mick is an ex-military sergeant in the bomb disposal team serving in Iraq and tragically lost both lower parts of his legs in action. He will join Lyn at Hillsborough to show his support for Team Lee.

To mark this ground breaking partnership, the Owls will shortly be selling custom-made Team Lee wristbands, with all proceeds going to the organisation.

Sheffield-based promotional gifts supplier, Steel City Marketing, have produced and donated 5,000 wristbands.

Spencer Taylor, CSR Manager at Sheffield Wednesday, said: “It is a great honour to announce the partnership with Lyn for Team Lee and we are delighted the club are showing its support.

“We hope that Wednesday fans show their support by wearing the Team Lee wristbands and back this fantastic cause moving forward.

“Many families, like Lee’s, are left to deal with the aftermath of conflict and this partnership will offer emotional and financial support to those who need it most.”

Lyn Rigby added: “It’s so good to have support from a club like Sheffield Wednesday as they care so much about charitable causes.

“I was told of the incredible unity shown by Wednesday fans and Glasgow Rangers fans in Lee’s memory when they met at Hillsborough last summer and I was completely overwhelmed.

“Everyone at the club has made us feel so welcome, which has been so touching for all the family.

“Sheffield Wednesday will help drive Lee’s memory in a positive way and ensure his legacy is long-lasting.

“Lee loved his football so it seems perfectly fitting to honour his memory in this way.”

*The Team Lee wristbands will be on sale shortly in the Owls Megastore.
