My quest - Phil King

Recommended Posts

Phil King was swept up by the Wednesday dream. He just fitted in like a glove and has since took wednesday and our fans to his heart. He's a top bloke who was always an 100% effort player yet down to earth and just loved mixing it with the fans. Keep the flag flying in Swindon Phil.

Its out the back of his boozer before our game last season, and the reason for the cans, well imagine the Travs in its heyday, then imagine bus loads of Wednesdayites all turning up all trying to get served, luckily Phil knowing we were coming, and of course to help maximise his takings had a woman with no teeth selling packs of cans and tuna and onion rolls at seperate bar.

i can remember playing swindon in our first season in league 1 in the 03/04 season (won 3-2)everybody met at the dolphin pre match and at about half 2 phil walked every wednesdayite from his boozer down to the ground. he was like the pied piper of swindon. i remember been in the middle and looking up and down the road and realising that wednesdayites are a different class. he was also stood on the away end for the first half singing along with everyone, but vanished at half time, probably to go and get a few more barrels in ready for after the match.

I once played 5 a side with Phil King up at abbeydale when he was still playing for us, it was out of season and he really shouldn't have been doing it but a mate of his talked him into it.

I remember how unbelievably skillful he was even though as a pro he wasn't known as a skillful player. He had the ball on the touchline and was just rolling it around and dragging it back making us all look proper idiots, and all in in a tiny little space on the line, mesmerising!

Top man, top footballer!

Is Phil King one of the best full backs to represent us?

I only started watching in 1989 and upto now I can't think of any players to lace his boots.

I think so

I started watching in '82 and I'd say he edges Worthington.

But from watching old film, and talking to those who were around in the 60s - Don Megson was a totally different class. Best Wednesday left-back by a country mile.

I move a lot of concrete on the QVC.

Worthington is the best I've seen with King a close second. They both made up arguably the best pairing I have seen - well possibly second to the Palmer/Shefidan pairing.

The greatest memory that I have of Kingey is when, during a match at Hillsborough, he went on a pitch-length determined run to the opposition bye-line and then sent in a low cross that one of our other players tapped in. Kingey stood atop an advertising hoarding celebrating in front of the Kop in a sort of flexing his biceps manner before being mobbed by his team mates. He hadn't scored but he knew that what he had just done to create the goal was special.

Kingy will be commentating vs Yeovil in a fortnight - always has time for a chat whilst the car park clears after the game...

The August 2003 Swindon game has to go down as one of the greatest days out of my life.

100 degree temps, queue not for the toilet but for the sink, lads getting in free via a hole in the mens room, uncovered away end, Kingy marching us to the ground with a police escort, Kingy cooking us all a breakfast.

Legendary day.

I remember that day, he got on the table outside and we were all singing 'Kingy Kingy give us a song' so he started to sing 'I never felt more like singing the blues' and we all joined in, That walk to the ground though - flip me!

I picked him up in the Taxi years later from the Garrison with him and his mate, he was playing in a testimonial or Charity game at Rotherham.

Top bloke, always got time for us.
