theowlsman
From what I hear, starting next summer, the Russian league is moving to a new calendar - basically ours - with seasons running from August - May, instead of the current set up (March - November). To facilitate the change, the current season will actually run from March 2011 - April 2012. With big gaps at various points in the year, to pad out the season. Therefore the Russians are not just available to play us in July, but will actually benefit, as it will help keep them match fit during one of their gaps. Edit - Apologies Bigrbuk - just seen your post. Cheers Neil, thanks Rob. Didn't know that - but I do now!
Sova
It is possible we might be playing their reserve team. If we play their first team, we could get hammered. However, at least they have a good kit. Here they are losing 2-0 recently to Zenit, the current Russian champions (watch for the pass for the second goal): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6LKVKO8F5g
theowlsman
Definitely a market we should be tapping into. Good players, reasonable fees.

Dan™
Our Austrian tour was organised by a special agency who have also organised pre-seasons for other English sides I believe. They chose all our training facilities, accommodation and our friendly opposition for us I think. Whether we got any say in it I don't know. Also, I have a couple of Russian friends who support Zenit St. Petersburg, I'll see if I can dig up any info on who we'll be playing.

Weshallovercome
We're going to a training camp that specialises in football........with other football teams........no doubt FC Volga Novgorod are also at the training camp at the same time and they fancied a kickabout. Case closed m'lord.

KivoOwl
Not sure who we're playing actually. There are two professional teams in the city of Nizhny-Novgorod FC Nizhny-Novgorod, in the 2nd Division and FC Volga Nizhny-Novgorod, just promoted to the top flight at their rivals' expense. No such team as just FC Volga Novgorod
Sova
It's definitely Volga. See this link; it says they're playing three friendlies against "serious opponents" -ourselves, Copenhagen and Hapoel Tel-Aviv. Volga have just had a good 3-0 win away in Tomsk, showing that they can score great goals as well as concede them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LlSfUorMgM
Guest TRC_OWL
Haha. But touring Austria, to play friendlies bang smack in the middle of their domestic season? dont they have a mid season break in russia, perhaps they want to stay in shape
