The Steel City Cup.

Recommended Posts

seem to remember one year at the stain

we were all over the kop, not a pig in sight but strangely they chose to turn up in the streets around the ground post match

bricks flying, dogs biting, all kicking off, all the way back to pond st

very strange tactics by their finest

They need us but we definately don't need them. Wer'nt it big Jack that said that about rekindling some sort of annual match.

He said, when they suggested it, 'They might need the prestige of playing us, but we don't need the prestige of playing them'.

Good old Jack.

It was always fun on the Shoreham in those days, calling here piggy, piggy, piggy as there was never any of them on it.

Also the Shipp cup gave us ample occasions to show them up on their own turf.

Obviously don,t condone that sort of thing nowadays etc, etc.

I remember Jack Charlton dumped it in the early 80's. He said there was no Kudos in beating Sheffield United. I think they were in division 4 when it was scrapped.

Almost the same scenario now. What would be the point of rekindling a competition with our tin pot neighbours when we're as MASSIVE as we are?!

Just looked it up on Wikipedia. Why the hell were the attendances so low? No game drew over 14,000.

it was shyte...

it aspired to be tinpot...

it was proper mickey mouse...

as jack charlton said "you need to play us, we don't need to play you"...

we'd send out a second or third rate side, and they'd make it their world cup final...

best let them keep it, or play stocksbridge or radio hallam for it...

it was thought up when both sides were struggling to win anything at all, THOSE DAYS ARE LONG GONE, WELL AT LEAST FOR ONE OF THE CLUBS... :tango:  :tango:

As it says at the top on wikipedia. The cup started out in 1990 & doubled as lawrie madden testimonial. We won 3-0 at hillsborough. We had just swopped places in the old first division.

The attendance that day was 19K
