I note in the OS this entry ... http://www.swfc.co.uk/news/article/faith-in-football-441453.aspx

Now, I'm an atheist and so I'd like to know why faith has anything to do with sport of any kind??

If I have a religion then it's wednesdayiteism

I'm a man of science and I find it difficult to believe in fairies at the bottom of the garden just as I find it difficult to believe in some Ultra being who had supposed to have made the earth in 6 days?

OK if Semedo is a catholic (I guess), that's down to him but I can't understand why on earth faith is being brought into the equation?

There's millions of news stories out there - why choose the one you personally disagree with to read, comment on etc ?

Life's too short innit

Live and let live and move on

Wednesday midfielder Jose Semedo teamed up with Kick It Out for a special forum on faith and football last week.

The Owls midfielder was joined by various representatives from the sporting community to discuss the role religion has to play in the professional game.

The free forum, entitled ‘A Focus on Faith’ was organised by football's equality and inclusion campaign Kick It Out and was held at Hillsborough.

Club chaplain Peter Allen, a leading representative of Sheffield Sport Chaplaincy and Sports Chaplaincy UK, joined Jose to deliver a keynote speech on how sport can help break down faith-related barriers.

Semedo said: “Despite the differences in our beliefs, all faith communities agree on the importance of offer care and respect to all people and that’s something we can work on together in football.

“Kick It Out are doing an great job promoting equality in football and the ‘Focus on Faith’ forum was an chance for us to share new ideas on how to get this message across.”

The forum also featured a presentation from Sheffield and Hallamshire FA and a Q&A with a specialist panel including; Aisling Cohn from 3 Faith Forum, Howard Holmes of Football Unites Racism Divides, Charlton Athletic Chaplain Matt Baker and Sarah Williams from The Rugby Football League along with the Owls vice-captain.

We had this kerfuffle when the chaplain put a Christmas/Easter message (can't remember which) on the website last year. Is it really that big an issue? If you don't want to read it, don't read it.

Think it maybe has something to do with the Kick It Out anti racism week.

Well I can understand the 'tolerance of others' angle both in region matter and ethnicity and i haven't got a problem with that but .. religion is a 'hidden' entity i.e. we could meet and neither of us would know each others religious beliefs where as if you were coloured I could see you were not of a European background if you get my drift.

Errr first of all get off your high horse

I regularly check the OS for ANY information and have reported the latest news here as I have done with other breaking stories in the past.

I comment, just has others do, with my opinion as this is still a free democracy!

See my earlier response.

I don't disagree with equality statements OR stamping out racism but ... faith has no place in sport - I assume my comments have touched a raw nerve with yourself.

I am a season ticket holder and also go to every away game.

I am a Christian and also a full time vicar.

To be a Wednesdayite requires an awful lot of faith!

Faith has a part to play for those who have it i guess.

Faith is a personal thing.

Religion and football don't mix well- Rangers and Celtic being an example.

But faith and religion are different. .

but closely intertwined ... "The Owls midfielder was joined by various representatives from the sporting community to discuss the role religion has to play in the professional game."

Faith has no place in sport??????

You have an incredibly immature view on the role of faith has in the all round life of someone like Jose Semedo.

Faith is important in life and in sport.

Can't see the problem, if I'm honest.

The atheist who argues against religion is just the same as the priest preaching to the non-believer.

Find your own way in life and don't knock how others find theirs.

Religion is all about your interpretation of something. I'm a Christian but do I believe every word in the bible? No I don't because I also believe in the scientific evidence.

The Bible has been used to form some of the Laws that keeps this very country out of the dark ages and if it can help to prevent scenes like Friday, JT and Suarez happening again then I don't see the problem.

I believe totally in the Bible.

I also totally believe that Christianity and science are not incompatible.

Neither are the creation accounts of the Bible and scientific research on how the world began incompatible.

The Victorians polarised views on these matters and ensured that people had to be in one camp or the other.

It's just not like that anymore.

Well it kinda is.... do you believe in evolution, natural selection etc or do you believe a supreme being crafted us all in a clay oven?

Pretty cut and dry i'd say

what about evolution as a vehicle of creation?

Take out the aspect of time and beginning and end which are the parameters which the human mind lays on things. What is left is something that is compatible.

When you think about the mind-numbing vastness of the universe, both larger and smaller than us, all the wondrous miracles that unfold within it, and our inconsequential status against such an awesome backdrop, to state definitively that there is no higher power might be the single most arrogant statement it is possible to make. Richard Dawkins might be an intelligent man by any academic measure, but in this regard he is one of the biggest simpletons imaginable... and utterly obnoxious in his pomposity to boot.

And before you make your obvious assumptions, no, I'm not especially devoted to any of the major organised religions either.

Most metaphysical teachings, including those of quantum physics, indicate that time may well be meaningless from other perspectives than ours.
