The first time i recall singing it amongst Wednesday fans was on our coach departing Highbury after our semi-final defeat in 1983. Pretty sure it must have been sung before then too. They'd started singing it before the 91 cup final but we were singing it yonks before them. Unfortunately, they got the credit from Eric Idle for it catching on and getting his song back in the charts. I remember us singing it at Anfield when we got hammered 5-1 in the late 80's. Even the scousers stood up and applauded us in the adjcent stand. I also remember us going mental when Dean Barrick scored to make it 5-1. It was bizzare...as though we'd just won the cup. killaowl Posted September 17, 2012 Share Posted September 17, 2012 We sung it back in 81, Man Utd sang it at Cup Winners Cup final after beating Barcelona 2-1 in Rotterdam the week after we beat them in the Rumbelows, copying us of course, then Eric brought the single out to cash in.
