Wimbledon to Belfast Proposal - Late 90s

I saw that article. What the feck did it have to do with Blair?

Good Friday Agreement and negotiating with the IRA was at the forefront of the news and politics back then, he obviously thought having a Belfast team would strengthen inclusivity for people in NI as part of the UK...

From the article it looks like Sam Hammam was also keen on a move to Dublin. Common scenario is the local leagues always voted against for fear of losing revenue / collapsing. Similar to the arguments of what would happen to Scottish clubs if Celtic / Ranges didn't bring their away following twice a year...

Funny when people don’t think of the club’s fans who would suffer from these ideas.

I read a Brighton fan saying it would be good for a club the size of Wednesday folding so that football does something about the financial problems.  Yeah, how about Brighton fold instead would he like that?

As if Wednesday folding would change things anyway. Life would just carry on.

And weird thing for a Brighton fan to say when you consider what they went through when they ended up playing their home games at Gillingham.

The main attempt to move wimbledon initially was to go to Dublin to take advantage of the significant amount of fans of English clubs - primarily Utd and Liverpool who have big followings in Ireland

It's no accident that they ended up in MK - an area with a sizeable catchment area but without a "big" club nearby

It was to catch the market of fans wanting to see the big clubs and Premier league football locally

Unfortunately for Don's their demise saw to it those dreams wouldn't be realised as the locals don't have the same appetite to turn it for Mansfield and stevenage as they would for Arsenal and City

Hammam has a lot to answer for as it was always his master plan but he lampooned as a member of the crazy gang who loved the club

I think the other thing that doesn’t get considered is that the people who live in these locations already support a team.

There aren’t many people just sat around waiting for a football team to just come along.

Tbf that was THE consideration

Initially to capture the neutrals and considerable amount of followers of the big teams

And over time to hopefully establish a more natural, local fan base.

Unfortunately for them by the time they had been given the go ahead to relocate they had tumbled through the divisions and the original plan could no longer work.
