duncanidaho
I've just been away for work again and re-read the excellent 'Brilliant Orange: The Neurotic Genius of Dutch Football' by David Winner. It's one of the best sports books I've read and I read it every couple of years. It discusses how the Dutch psyche, environment and social attitudes led to the resurgence in Dutch football from the 60's onwards. 'Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game' by Michael Lewis is one of my favourite sports books ever. It has not only impacted Baseball but has also got influences in modern football, look at Matthew Benham with FC Midtjylland, Brentford FC and general football analytics. And from my youth in the 70's 'Goalkeepers are different' by Brian Glanville was brilliant too, about an up and coming young keeper playing against the stars and teams of that decade. Reading it now is like a trip down memory lane...

Ever the pessimist
Behind the Curtain by Jonathan Wilson. About football in Eastern Europe after the fall of the Soviet Union. Same author, Angels with Dirty Faces. A footballing history of Argentina, loads on Argentine psyche and how the football philosophies have often mirrored the country’s wider situation. g-owls
Before I opened this thread I was ready to write down ‘Brilliant Orange” A great football book that’s not all about football. ’Inverting the pyramid’ is also a very good read as it takes a dive into the evolution of football tactics. Anthndav
Inverting the Pyramid: a history of football tactics. It's a good read, but the sections on the 1800's are quite dry!
