Wing Backs

Lol exactly my thoughts from last season. However people at the Lincoln game said he looked fit and athletic and was getting up and down. I watched the highlights of the game and I have to agree from the bits I saw he looked a different player physically to the one we saw last year.....

Yeah, I always remembered Boyd as a player that didn't have any pace but was always no stop running with a fair bit of quality to go with it. I don't hold much stock in pre season games but it would be nice to see the Boyd that I remember for Hull and Posh in a Wednesday shirt, suppose he played in a different position for them though.

Think Reach could be a good left wing back if he can sort out how to defend/ tackle at the right moment, “timing is everything”. Palmer certainly looked good in the highlights I’ve seen of the Lincoln game, but he has to learn how to cross and make good decisions in the opponents penalty area. I seem to remember him fluffing shots/crosses last season as he chose the wrong option, (a bit like that clown Sterling for England). As for Boyd, would he be better at right wing back as he seems to be predominantly right footed? He played well at Lincoln too, but it’s a different kettle of fish in the Championship as we know.

One thing for sure Jos is the right man to sort them out, I’m sure he’s a better coach than the “other bloke” was in terms of player development and will get the players thinking about how to keep improving rather than stagnating in their skill levels.

Hope so anyway. Remember these are the aging ramblings of an alcohol soaked brain...and it’s only 11.30am! :duntmatter:

Pretty worrying the wingback situation atm, Hunt would have been good but obviously he's gone. I think Reach will be fine and do a job there but I feel after watching him last season play centrally his best fit might be in the midfield 3?

The fact that we have Boyd/Palmer/Baker/Fox/Reach possibly even Pudil all competing for the fullback positions does not fill me with any confidence.

Still think Pudil is the best left wing back we have.

5 years younger maybe ...  no way has he got the legs for it these days

The odd thing is that you might think that wing back is a really specialist position which requires a lot of expertise and training.

But history shows us that teams which successfully played with wing backs often had unconventional players in the role, for example:

Victor Moses

Ashley Young

Alan Thompson

Shaun Wright-Phillips

Darren Anderton

Cuadrado

So maybe the likes of Boyd could really surprise us in this role?

Don't know what everyone's moaning about - Reach and Boyd would be a superb wingback combo, Lee and Palmer excellent alternatives on the right. Fox as backup on the left is meh but remember that Reach played pretty much every minute last season so frankly who cares - we're broke.

In the context of who they play for, none of them have been totally convincing

Do agree though, some of the best wing backs, or even full backs, started off as wingers
