SHEFFIELD Wednesday have clinched their third signing of the summer.

It is set to be officially announced within the next 48 hours after the undisclosed player took a medical yesterday and the formalities were all but completed.

Manager Dave Jones has stuck by his policy of refusing to name a new signing until everything is done and dusted.

But the new boy could well be Palace and former England centre half Anthony Gardner.

The 31-year-old is out of contract this summer and will be in demand after proving his fitness by making more than 60 appearances for the Eagles in the last two seasons.

Earlier in his career he suffered injury setbacks but his talent brought a £1m move for Port Vale to Spurs in 2000, a record-breaking £2.5m switch to Hull in 2008, and an England cap in 2004 when he took over from John Terry as a half-time sub for Sven-Goran Eriksson’s team against Sweden.

The 6ft 5ins defender was widely regarded in his Spurs days as a potential successor to Sol Campbell. Gardner’s recent Championship experience would fit the bill for the Owls, who want at least one new centre half.

Gardner spent all the 2010-11 season on loan from Hull to Palace and joined the Eagles on a free last summer, on a one-year contract.

Boss Dougie Freedman wanted him to stay for next season and offered him a new deal. Freedman said only a week ago: “Anthony has done well for us.”

Players linked with the Owls include Derby striker Chris Maguire. Reading winger Michail Antonio and Portuguese midfield player Diogo Amado.
