torryowl
been watching wednesday since 62 and in that time we've had 22 managers of which only 4 left on there own accord and 2 of them (brown and wilko) were driven out by the tightness of the board and 1other (big ron ) got the sack 2nd time round .why is it that we can never get it right and find an up and coming manager who can get us some success, is the job to big for a young manager or is the club not attractive enough to get a decent experienced man in . Apart from big Ron ( first time )- best manager to my recollection was Harry Catterick ( as you can tell im gettin on a bit ).For those not old enough to remember he came to us from Rochdale .We had never heard of him and of course all the whingers and whiners of the time were trying to get him out before he had even started. They were WRONG. WHAT A MANAGER !

jonnyowl
Well it's probably the best state financially the club has been in and with a proper chairmen since pleat was brought in. The next appointment will probably be the made by the best informend and most knowledgeable chairman we have had since Richards appointed Francis! alanharper
The job is too big for an inexperienced manager. Time and time again over the last 15 years, due to financial constraints more than anything, we've been forced to go for them as the cheap option based usually on a brief period of relative success at a smaller club - the likes of Wilson, Jewell, Turner, Laws, Mogadon Man etc. and it just hasn't worked. The difference now, hopefully, is with the club no longer being skint we actually have the opportunity to attract an experienced manager who knows how to operate in the pressure environment of a big club. Paolo Coopio
Not that he was worth hanging on to, but did Peter Shreeves just quit of his own accord? I dont remember actually getting sacked?

devon_owl
Yorath quit instead of being sacked after being asked to by a fan. I'll give her a tenner if she could lean over and say the same words at the Yeovil game.

Paolo Coopio
He was manager when we went down in 2000, Jewell took over that summer. Yeah but then he took over from Jewell when he was sacked around Feb time. He kept us up and was given the job. He started the next season as manager but left after around 2 months of the new season underway.

FARMER
Bert Magee knew what a proper manager smelt like, he got Charlton, Wilkinson & Atkinson, but wouldn't spend a ha'penny. Richards couldn't judge a manager for toffee, but gave them loads of cash. The perfect balance of looser purse strings & a great manager only occured during the latter part of Ron's first stint. Magee's knack of finding a good man for the club + Richards' willingness to compete on wages etc. Eric Taylor couldn't stand Catterick (jealous?), & refused to buy the player Harry thought would win us the title. FARMER
mcgee was far and away the best chairman we had and how we used to give him stick for not spending money , as for richards well he spent what we didnt have and we,ve been payin for it these last 10 years Bert was a great chairman & dragged us up by the bootstraps. I have a slightly different view than yours on Richards. He clearly knew where football in this country was going, which is why he's where he is now. Had he backed good managers with money instead of the losers he appointed the recent history of SWFC would be quite different. The elusive crossover between a good manager & money was achieved for an all too brief spell, but what magic it was. The downside of Bert's way was that no matter how good the men he got, they'd want to go elsewhere in order to win things. The downside of Dave's way has been with us for fifteen years.
