Drenthe v Antonio

Recommended Posts

I'll wait to see how he plays but I'd usually rather have someone like Antonio who is trying to make their name than someone who has been falling from grace.

No question drenthe is a better player but if his old issues arise then it won't matter.

Antonio showed he can be effective at the weekend and that wasn't even one of his better performances. Simply having that pace and power down the wing really stretched us

Just been speaking to a Reading fan...he reckons Drenthe is on 52K a week on a four year deal at Reading. Says he is an unbelievable player, incredible skill, very quick feet, fast and strong. As people have said on here tho the problem is his attitude; there are rumours of him turning up to training and matches drunk. Had a big fall out with Adkins who refuses to play him and, apparently he was a chairman's signing. He's been training with the u21s so no idea what sort of match fitness he will have. As mentioned by fellow posters he might be a sub for a while until he gets match fit.

I'm sure I read he was in the last year of a 2 year deal

according to wiki he.s in the last year of a 2 year contract with the option of a 3rd (unlikely) .....if your reading mate is right then i would doubt he,ll be leaving permanant any time soon unless he´s prepared to take a huge hit on his wages.it doesnt ring true that he was a chairmans signing who gives him 52k a week and then lets the manager who´s living on a knife edge anyway not play him .

some more info from the Reading press:

"With the departure of Royston Drenthe from Reading FC this week, who very much meets the overpaid and overhyped category, we looked at the other players who've joined Royals with high expectations only to disappoint massively.

Thanks to Clive Baskerville and The Tilehurst End blog for their help.

1. Royston Drenthe

Royals fans must have had a double take last year when it was announced the club had signed the former Real Madrid player Royston Drenthe.

Fans of Everton, where he had a spell on loan, said he COULD tear the Championship apart, but also could decide he couldn't really be bothered.

Sadly, the latter was the case and what followed was a very public spat with boss Nigel Adkins, no squad number and training with the youth team.

All on a whacking great wage that the club continues to pay while the Dutchman is on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.

Royals fans will be hoping he doesn't come back, all with a sense of what might have been."
