Going to be a sickener for Man United to have to pay at least half of his wages until his contract is up though if he leaves- none of the mid table sides are paying him £200k a week, and he isn’t taking a pay cut.

Serves Man U right for their horrendous recruitment though. Anybody with a pair of eyes could have told you he was miles away from being an elite centre half. The fact he was also made captain just topped it all off.

Sit out contract and go back to the Blunts with a bit of luck.

Stripped, tarred and feathered.

No longer captain, was only a matter of time. Can’t understand what the Irons want him for..

I'd say for his England performances, he's not a man u player, but defo a premier League one for me. Hammers be a good move for all parties

All about styles of play. For defensive Blunts & Leicester teams where they sat back and had lots of midfield protection he was great for holding the line, playing everything in front, heading everything out and making the odd roaming run up the field where cover would fill in behind him..

At Man U he's expected to be further up the pitch always on the half turn to combat speedy strikers and balls in behind as well as have better positioning, just not his game.

He's not a bad player and is a top level pro, just not an elite one suited to Utd. Didn't help him that Van Dijk was (although expensive) cheaper and looks like a Rolls Royce with the attributes above.

Spot on but even his positioning seems to gone now..

He's a good player when the entire system is built around him i.e. three at the back, defensive midfielder in front, low block.

Why Southgate loves him so much.

Not good enough to be playing in a two where a team is looking to be on the front foot, play a high line etc., which is most top teams in this country.
