kilnhurstowl
I was thinking, if you play for a semi pro team but then you get promoted to a pro league and the team want to keep you, what do you do with the job you used to do part time? Eg stacking shelves. Is it a case of drop it for one season incase you get relegated back to semi-pro league or what? I have never understood how it works at that lower level where there is a great risk of going out of the pro league
alanharper
Personally I'd take a career break from stacking shelves, and hope that I could secure another such privileged position when I'd finished being a pro footballer.
Arthur Bach
Interesting scenarios can arise. You're 28, have a partner expecting your first child but after a rich run of form a League Two side offer you a 2 year contract on £1,100 per week. You've passed the medical but know deep down your pace isn't what it was. You're currently on £750 a week at a local firm that is expanding and you play for a well established non-league club earning £100 appearance fee and a £50 goal bonus. At this level you are expected to play well into your 30's. Its a no-brainer.

You sign for Donny and can tell your kids you were a professional footballer

Maddogbob
In Bach's scenario you stay semi pro. The rewards on offer non league wise, can be pretty good. I once met a lad who ran his own 1 to 1 coaching and was playing for Stockport in the nl north at the time. He got 10k just for being part of the promotion team. So non league money at the top end, well it's still pretty generous and you can carve a decent living. Playing and working part time.
