Early history of The Wednesday Cricket Club

Recommended Posts

I've been collecting reports of the Wednesday club from the Sheffield newspapers of late - here are some of the earliest mentions of the club I've been able to find -

Earliest mention of the club - Sheffield Independent, 25th October 1828

Note that the club is already said to be 'old'

Earliest match report - Sheffield Independent, 22nd August 1829

Closing dinner & Tom Marsden challenge - Sheffield Independent, 10th October 1829

Marsden was an outstanding cricketer of the age, and a proud Wednesday man

This cup is currently in the possession of Sheffield City Council, and was competed for last year by the current incarnation of The Wednesday CC

Here's one for you Kivo.

My Dad (now 83) always tells me the nickname OWLS comes from the Old Wednesday League. Have you come across anything in your research to back this up?

Can't be true that buddy. We were nicknamed the blades before the owls. Can only presume we became the owls when we moved to owlerton!
