Players not having pride in their own performance probably contributed more. Many players out of contract at the end of the season instead of doubling their efforts to put themselves in the shop window so to speak,or raise their profile to get a better deal at their new clubs, just couldn't be bothered, says it all really.

This is just pie in the sky - no employee whether a tinker, tailor, footballer or cakeball-maker, told that they will be out of a job in 3 months and in the meantime not to expect to be paid on time, is going to double their effort.

A footballer has a short career to start with and can get injured at any time ending everything.  If you are at the end of your contract and not even getting paid you are not going to put your body on the line to quite the same extent are you.  Even if it is just a couple of percent commitment in the back of your mind, that can be the difference between winning and losing in professional sport.

What about the pride or self respect of an employer to actually pay the people he has employed?  That is where the responsibility lies.
