Jos or Irvine

Recommended Posts

Big Jacks was in charge for nearly 300 odd games, so to get nearly 40% is ok.

Irvine and Jos are on similar footing with games managed, although I shouldn’t have distracted from the real debate, which is probably related to dour style of play.

But as I was an baby / infant at the time of Big Jacks reign, I’m not in a position to comment.  Reading the positions we finished though,  I’m guessing (happy to stand corrected) that the love for Big Jack is probably more down to the era, his character, and people reminiscing over their younger days.

Dour play - I can't argue with that. I class Jos as the Dutch Irvine.

Just the quality of the opposition is what's saving Jos. Much of Irvines stats and wins were down to playing against an attack the quality of Bolton Wanderers' on Tuesday. As the previous poster noted, Irvines time was spent in league one against opposition no where near the standard that Jos is facing every week.

Alan Irvine was a disgrace. The way he clung on to his job waiting to be sacked as we crept nearer to relegation to the bottom division was horrific. Just standing on the touchline with arms folded, completely silent and stationary as the players didn't put any effort in whatsoever.

Megson couldn't fail to improve our fortunes after him, it was like Sturrock following Turner. A real no lose job for a manager.

This is an interesting point. The next appointment after Jos is very likely a "no win job". How anyone can turn this shipwreck round is beyond me.
