Giving Irvine another chance if we do sign half a new team?

You can talk about 'pertinent issues' all you like and, this being football in 2011, fans feel entitled to a definitive answer; we like to think that success/failure happen for a reason. Those issues were only a concern when things were going wrong on the pitch.

But because the squad were underperforming, the team MUST have been divided?

It's all an irrelevance, Wednesday's 2009-10 squad was average at best (Irvine had his reasons for releasing as many players as he could in the summer) and because the funds weren't in place during 09-10 to bring in enough quality in the loan market or the January transfer window to make enough impact, Wednesday were never in an irretrievable situation but it was hardly surprising that Wednesday ended up going down either.

How can you state definitively that 'outside' issues weren't to blame when you don't even know what those issues might have been in the first place? If I presented similar statistics regarding a different subject detailing a consistent level of performance for two years that saw a sudden and steep decline, then a sharp spike upwards, and then a return to the previous level, only a fool would conclude that something significant hadn't changed leading to each anomalous trend. Only your predetermined judgements are preventing you from recognising the starkly obvious. And just in case your own logic isn't up to the task, the last chairman has painstakingly detailed a number of factors that may have played their part.

If our players were collectively so poor, why did this manifest itself so suddenly and how were they able to disguise it so effectively for the two years prior to that?

But because the squad were underperforming, the team MUST have been divided?

Where did I say they were divided? You're making assumptions based on your own prejudices, and not for the first time. A number of issues have been identified which might have contributed to the slump and although the general attitude of certain players was among them there are plenty of others that have nothing to do with that.

Wouldn't the very definition of 'average' be mid-table then - much like we were throughout 2008/9 and again in 2009/10 before October? As for Irvine releasing loads of players, whilst of course in the majority of cases this was deserved, I think you'll find it is something that happens invariably when a new manager arrives regardless. He wants to stamp his mark on it and not have to share the credit with predecessors if he does well.

The arrival of Purse

The departure of Wood

The turning down of offers for players from premiership clubs, who wanted to go

players being promised things that didnt happen

Players who didnt want to go being touted for sale

Jeffers

Miller hardly playing a game

any and all of those would probably cause disruption between players.
