Nzd
Hi all, I have a quick question for the statos among you. I write for Wikipedia and am trying to compile a breakdown of career stats by season for Joe Cockroft. Unfortunately the source I was using for the Wednesday stats seems to be out by 1. The Sheffield Wednesday Archive shows a total of 86 apps. http://www.adrianbullock.com/swfc/stats/play0113.htm However, the Joyce book, Hugman, and the SWFC handbook all give 87. http://hugmansfootballers.com/player/3739 http://hillsborough.independent.gov.uk/repository/docs/SWF000003230001.pdf Unfortunately, the person who compiled the Wednesday stats died some time ago and I'm not aware of any other sites that provide this level of detail for Wednesday players. Can anyone help reconcile the rogue appearance? Possibly a play-off game or something? Also, if anyone happens to know if there are stats for his wartime games at Wednesday, that would be great too. Many thanks.
torryowl
according to 2 books written by Jason Dickenson who also wrote the official history of the club Cockcroft appeared in 87 league games and 10 fa cup games ....he also appeared in 198 wartime games scoring 13 goals .....I know in the book preface he uses the official club records in his research
fredmciverslovechild
Look on Adrian Bullock's website for 1946/47 and you will see that in the player listing at the bottom he shows 33 appearances for Cockcroft. But on Cockcroft's individual record he shows only 32. So it's a simple answer; he put the wrong figure down and there is no "rogue appearance"
Nzd
Thanks both for your replies. @fredmciverslovechild: Well spotted. There's a lesson for me there :) @torryowl: That's really useful information. Could you let me know which of the books mentions the wartime games please? Thanks again. fredmciverslovechild
You need to get "Sheffield Wednesday - The Complete Record" by Brodie and Dickinson. This gives team line ups, scorers, attendances etc etc for every game up to the end of the 2010/11 season and includes war time games. There is also "Sheffield Wednesday - A Complete Record 1867 - 1987" by Keith Farnsworth although that is not quite as accurate. I would also recommend "Wednesday!" also by Keith Farnsworth from 1982 which is an excellent written history of the club.

Yep, you should be OK there too. Sheffield FC tend to keep good records even though they are , I think, still non professional. FFS
