Imagine a right-angled triangle with the hypoteneuse on the left. The perpendicular is the M1 from J28 (the A38) down to J25. The base is the A25 from J25 to Derby. The hypoteneuse is the A38. Although Pythagoras would have it that the square on the hypoteneuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the two opposite sides, he would have agreed with me that the length of the hypoteneuse is indeed shorter than the sum of the lengths of the perpendicular and the base. Thus, it is a shorter journey down the A38.

Now that's thinking outside the box......
