Lawrenson feels North End’s problems stem all the way back to the end of 2009 when they sacked Alan Irvine – a decision which the former Republic of Ireland star reckons was a big mistake. Irvine wasn’t out of work long – he was immediately offered a route back into management at Sheffield Wednesday. He couldn’t prevent Wednesday from being relegated last season but the Owls look a good bet to earn promotion from League One. “It’s Murphy’s Law that we’ll get relegated and Sheffield Wednesday will probably pass us on the way up,” he added. “Dismissing Alan Irvine was a pretty big mistake. It wasn’t the appointment of Darren Ferguson which was the mistake it was the decision to dismiss Alan Irvine that was. “There were never any real grounds to dismiss him.
