OWLS SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN WITH CANCER

Sheffield Wednesday players showed their support for a national football fundraising campaign for children and young people’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent at their latest game against Charlton Athletic.

The club is supporting CLIC Sargent’s Kick! campaign that encourages schools and groups across the UK to hold their own sponsored football event to raise money for families affected by childhood cancer – like the Futters.

Five-year-old Issabelle, from Ecclesfield in Sheffield, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in October 2009. She enjoyed the game from a special box at the stadium with her family, as a guest of the club.

Issabelle’s mum Wendy says: “When Issabelle was diagnosed we received fantastic support from CLIC Sargent - our social worker Patrick took a lot of pressure off us and helped with everything from filling in forms to just being around when we needed someone to talk to. Issabelle is doing really well now and we’re pleased to be supporting CLIC Sargent’s Kick! campaign.

“My husband and son Benjamin are huge Sheffield Wednesday fans and had a great time match, but I think Issabelle might be an even bigger fan than them now especially after meeting her favourite player Tommy Spurr. She keeps on asking for a season ticket!”

Sheffield Wednesday will be helping to promote CLIC Sargent’s Kick! campaign to fans and staff with information on their website and in the match programme.

Kick! is a fun football fundraising event for children and young people of all ages and abilities. Schools and groups are encouraged to host their own football event, learn new skills and get active to raise money for CLIC Sargent. More than 576,000 children have taken part in Kick! since the campaign launched six years ago and over £880,000 has been raised to help children and young people with cancer to date.

Spencer Taylor, CSR development manager at Sheffield Wednesday, said: “We were delighted to invite Issabelle and her family to Hillsborough in support of CLIC Sargent’s Kick! campaign. We think Kick! is a great way to encourage young people to combine football and fundraising for a great cause.”
