Playing players on merit?

Why won't Irvine do this?

He said after yesterday's match that he choose Morrison/Madine on the basis of he had watched Leyton Orient and thought they was the best 2 to pick.

Maybe this is a big part of the problem some players are getting too comfortable in knowing that they will be playing no what matter..hence why should they want to try that lot harder when they know next week they will play?

I mean take Heffernan for example (not saying this is the case) but maybe he does not try as hard in training because he knows that he won't be playing at the weekend and when he does get a chance and scores it means flip all.

Irvine is so worried about what the opposition that he picks a team based on them and not who is on form or deserve to play.

Don't get me wrong some of the players are not blameless in all of this but you do have to ask yourself if the players don't wanna give that extra because they know no matter what they play the following week and same with the players who are not playing why should they try harder in training when they know they won't get a chance.

Irvine stated that if you do well you keep the shirt (well something like that) why are we not seeing it?

And why is he not doing the opposite to that - if you are not having the best time of it take them out of the team?
