What a freaking day,kop was absolutely heaving, tanked up on ickle bottles of whisky, wildly ecstatically po- going the whole match, what a day out, you'll never ever beat that day in the last 40 odd years ,nothing has beat it,not even THE semi final, fantaaaastic memorable day.

No buses that day, sat in the upper west (uncle in law who was a Blade got the tickets) and celebrated every goal. There were loads of owls up there 🙂

Brilliant memory!

I was 11 at the time and although I’d been going to games a while it was the first time I was nervous before a match. My stomach was doing somersaults and I don’t know why none of my mates were pigs there were none at school but I knew this was huge this wasn’t a normal game and oh what a game all these years later I can still see mellors cracker TC celebrating in front of that lot king tapping in and smithy slotting away the penalty in front of a near empty away end.it was a hell of a day few have bettered it in over forty years few ever will despite their protestations they never matched or bettered it although we did at Wembley. The boxing day massacre a thing of beauty

He doesn't mention the game in his autobiography, although the whole 79/80 season is only one paragraph in his book.

From Tony Kenworthy. United captain on the day.

"Jack Charlton sent Tony Toms [Wednesday coach] to tap me up about a week or two after the match," he recalled. "He said 'big Jack has asked me to ask you if you would like to sign for a big club in Sheffield?'

"I said I already am. I will never forget that, he tapped me on the back and he was off and I never saw him again.
