Blip or Steady decline?

Blip or Steady Decline?

  1. 1. We've only scored 1 goal in the last 3 games and dropped 6 points in the process. Is this evidence that we're going backwards or nothing more than a temporary glitch while we have key players out injured?

    • just a blip (don't panic!)
      128
    • steady decline (we're doomed!)

I find the expectation point really interesting as it feels like quite a few have moved the goalposts since the start of the season.

Initially there was a general consensus that Moore needed to deliver top 2 for the season to be considered successful. Currently we are very much in the mix to achieve that goal.

However many have now decided that top 2 isnt enough and its only acceptable that we do this playing free flowing entertaining football.

Apparently the football had been dreadful all season even though we create more chances than anyone else bar Ipswich and score more goals than the vast majority of other teams as well.

I'm not saying everything's perfect by any stretch or that people cant have concerns. I think we all agree that the last few performances need inproving on.

Still it feels as though some people set a standard that isn't realistic and is unlikely to be met regardless of who is in charge.

Rest assured if we sacked Moore the same people would start on the next manager after a week or so too

Thats why these moaners should be ignored

Theyre hysterical drama queens

Ooh look, a stat - it also shows more than a third are worried, that should be a concern, or do we ignore that?

And you need to accept it when we challenge them. Like I'm sure you would have done if Francis was still in charge. lol

Windass has only been on the pitch for 50% of our recent three game 'blip'.

50%, more or less is simply doesn’t matter - the evidence is there to see - he couldn’t hit a door from two foot. He, along with his Dad  obviously think he is considerably better than he actually is. Get shut and bring in a ‘hungry’ player who will work hard to impress. Windass is living on a past reputation.

Not quite accurate I feel, goal posts have moved in the same way they did last Year.

People(fans) are saying ONLY top 2 an acceptable measure of success, based on only achieving such is a guarantee of promotion.

And if we are honest,a lack of belief that we are mentally tough enough (as a squad of players) to get through the Play offs.

Some already now using the language we saw last Year of “ in touch with” top 2 in this case, last Year it was about the play off places when we struggled to stay in a play off place.

Debate about “entertaining” I feel is interlinked as we have a striker who scored 25 league and up goals in L1 last Year but who like Wing b4 him(might end and Wilks?) are proven goal scorers at other Clubs but blank fire here

Why? People are asking is it the way we set up and play?

Fair Q and a fair debate to be had I feel some fans feeling if we set up to attack these Div 3 defences and Goal keepers in a more direct way, using our 2 strikers that we would steam roller them and win games

Ergo it would be more “entertaining” AND rack up more points…

I would understand that if we were a league higher but in this league with this squad of player it is not unrealistic to be looking at a top 2 finish. I think it is odd that we look back on previous seasons with different players and managers in higher leagues as an excuse as to why this squad in this leagues performances are acceptable. Statistics have been shown tthere is direct correlation between wages and league position. Why shouldn’t we be looking top 2. For the main part of the season the football has been poor and is getting exponentially worse. And all teams have injuries- look at Plymouth. This is why we have a large squad.

Completely agree that we should be aiming for and expecting top 2. I don't think I said or implied otherwise in my post.

The point I was making is that some posters have decided that top 2 isn't acceptable unless it's also achieved alongside exciting, attacking football.

Fair comment but at the moment it’s looking like neither and people are getting concerned. Plenty of time yet but like I say my concerns are the performances . We are half way through the season and have put in less than a handful of decent ones. If we have a similar second half as last season then we will cruise to the top 2 but that can’t be guaranteed just because it happened last year.

I can't comment on others but I don't think I've moved the goal posts. For clarity I absolutely expect promotion this season and would deem the season and DM to have been unsuccessful if we don't achieve it.

Sure and I appreciate that. I too am concerned about the last few performances. But I'm generally optimistic as I think on the whole we've been fairly decent for most of the season.

Would love both, but sadly expect neither, and don't fancy us at all in the Play-Offs.

There have been many examples in 'recent' years of managers exceeding, matching or failing to meet expectations. Seeing as Atkinson is constantly mentioned as the benchmark of what could be achieved at the club, I have gone back to around that era since he left. It is of course subjective, and based on where we were as a club at the time, resources etc.

Exceeding I would list Sturrock, Laws, Gray and in his 1st season Carlos, Meeting I would list Megson, Francis (his overall achievement combined) Jones (got us promoted then blah) and failing miserably Jos, Monk, Irvine, Pulis, Yorath, Shreeves, Jewell and Wilson.

Moore is currently in the failing category, given his resources and players at his disposal. Bruce was doing well but left after 10 minutes - so could have gone either way.

This just isn’t true or factual in any way though

He commented about being in the top 2. Are we in the top 2 currently.

On the flip side some people think that demanding every game is won is some kind of bigger level of support for their club than a more realistic expectation that we will have ups and downs throughout a season

It may well be just `some people' whose expectations are result based. Most posters are more concerned about the level of performances against very very average and poor sides. The Exeter managers comments after the game were spot on.

He's going through a sticky patch and is being asked to play a different role one week to the next, which is probably not helping.

To blame this recent run on him seems a bit harsh when he's only been on the pitch for half of it, though.
