Christmas at SWFC - what’s happened?

Recommended Posts

I don’t know why but I’ve always viewed the Christmas period at SWFC as eventful

You get the Boxing Day matches of course but it’s more than that

We seem to have sacked high profile managers during the Christmas period a few times and there’s always something going on

It could be a classic game, a player kicking off at the club, players always getting ‘injured’ to get home to the mates and family etc - there’s always something

Maybe it’s a mad time getting to and from a specific game or fancy dress amongst the fans etc too

What noteable events come to mind when Sheffield Wednesday and Christmas are mentioned?

I can't quite bring to mind the detail, but I am pretty sure that one year, I would think in the late 1970s, we had a home game shortly after Christmas - might even have been Boxing Day - where we were at home to one of the local clubs, and we won by a notably large score, a score not seen in such games before or since.

My understanding is that the match was well attended, and is from time to time commemorated in songs sung by fans.

No doubt others will have some relevant memories of this.

Yes but that’s such an easy cliche answer

There has been way more Christmas incidents at our club than that

Dooleys sacking for instance

I might have mentioned this before, but Burnley away. early 80s. New Years Day.

In the pub, lots of fancy dress brought over from previous night’s parties. Outside lots of aggro. Various “characters” chasing up and down the street after the locals. All a bit Monty Python / Benny Hill.

The main memory for me is of Hitler at the turnstile being denied entry to the ground unless he hands over his pistol: clearly a plastic replica. “But I’ll lose my deposit” say a despondent Adolf to PC Plod.

I think we won 3-1 with Andy Mc getting at least one, although that could be a false memory. Or different game.

Carlos and Jos sacked also. Definitely squeaky bum time for a manager at Wednesday near Christmas  😆 Wasn't Westwood usually injured around this time  too?

Lost 4-1 I think. Hitler must've been doubly gutted

Been loads of memorable game around Christmas over the years

2006, Crossley scoring against Southampton and Deon Burton smashing in a last minute winner against Stoke, then think we also beat Barnsley away around Christmas too

1992 , Man U 3-3 game on Boxing Day

1994. Hammered Everton away

2015. Stunned Brummy game

1993. The Waddle game

2004. Battered Donny 4-0

prob loads more that I’ve forgot
