Suspending the Championship during the World Cup - An Overreaction

Whilst the Premier League and Championship are suspended during international breaks, Leagues 1 and 2 aren't, but teams can have league matches postponed if 3 or more players are called up.

So with 27 of the 32 World Cup squads announced, how many Championship players are going?

21

Only 1 club has 3 players called up (Swansea) all the rest have 1 or 2 - 10 teams have no call ups at all.

So it seems to me suspending the Championship for the duration of the World Cup is a fairly pointless overreaction and simply the FA creating a huge problem for itself. Sure Swansea should be allowed to postpone their games and games should be rescheduled to avoid England World Cup matches - but other than that the Championship should go ahead.

Just another example of how out of touch the FA are with fans.

Agree, though I don't think that if they did go ahead with the fixtures Swansea would want to miss too many and have to catch say 3-4 games up. However, if they have the choice to postpone but aren't made to then that seems fair to me

Wouldn’t it have been an EFL decision rather than FA?

I wouldn’t be happy if i supported a team that had two key players missing for 4 or 5 games and had to play teams with no one missing though!

here is a novel idea: hold the World Cup in the summer🤷‍♂️

It's a world Cup.

Our seasons and time zones aren't the only people who matter.

It stinks that Qatar and Russia before got the world Cup, but as fans we can't love football cos its the world's game then get the ******** in cos it doesn't fit our schedule once in a generation

the cricket season carries on without players who are playing in Test teams.

the rugby premiership carries in while the 6 nations and autumn internationals take place.

we keep getting told football is about squads and that teams should be allowed to play whoever they want to from competition to competition.

so why not have competitions carry on during the world cup?  maybe teams could use the players they loaned out and some of the benchwarmers they buy to stop other teams buying them.

it's 28 days, 4 weekends and that is only for the teams who go deep into the competition so live with it.  besides, the england players will be all back in a fortnight anyway...

Could probably half that number of Championship players if Wales hadn't qualified. No reason whatsoever for the championship to pause. Could say same about the Scottish Premiership but at the time the decision was made they could've still qualified.

Some squads are missing quite a few players so for me there should be a break. I think it’s right that the Championship and Scottish Premiership are having a break otherwise it’s unfair on the clubs that have players missing. There’s always a break in first team fixtures during these tournaments. Why change it?

In Scotland Celtic would be missing 4 from their starting XI and Hearts 3 if there was no break. That’s quite a chunk for both. And like you say it would have been more if Scotland had qualified.

the only way to stop nonsense like this is hit them in the pocket . its almost pointless having sky sports etc upto xmas if supporters said no football i want 6 weeks credit they would soon change there mind.

luckily this dont effect us just the 1 good reason we are in league 1 plus we get saturday 3pm games which in the championship if your doing well you dont play very often at that time.
