First thought was West Ham didn't win the league in '81 (they've never won it), so maybe the OP is getting confused with when West Ham won the FA Cup in 1980, so maybe Wednesday gave them a guard of honour as FA Cup holders at the first game of the 80/81 season. But we played Newcastle at home. Then it finally clicked we played West Ham last game of the season on 8th May 1981 when they would have won that season's Division Two.

alanharper
I'd only been going a few months, I'd have been 9 by then, don't remember much about the game, a vague memory of Jeff King going clear on goal but missing, but for some reason I do remember that it was played on a Thursday night because the original April date was postponed because of freak snow. So apparently it was a Friday night. I knew it was a very unusual night to be playing football in those days anyway.

Yeah that’s my recollection mate That the game was originally postponed due to snow
