Pleats time was strange in the fact his first season we weren’t safe mathematically on the final day, then we finished 7th and really should have qualified for Europe. Then we started badly before he was sacked. I wasn’t a Pleat fan, but he brought some excellent players to the club.

Pleats team consisted of 6 or 7 defenders, he had Peter Atherton playing in midfield. We had 3 games left and need 3 points to guarantee Europe we failed to get the 3 points only getting 1 but did finish top in the fair play league. We had 15 draws that season.
HirstWhoScoredIt
FACT CHECK:- This was the table. Doncaster had obtained 1 point from the last 5 matches - writing on the wall? 5 1

I know it's off-topic but I had to double-check that Pleat season. I'd totally forgotten a) what a strong position we were in with 4 games to go, and b) how difficult we were to beat. I mean look at the table from late April - you'd have thought we were a cert for top 6 and even had a sniff of 4th. And only Man U had lost fewer games (unfortunately we lost the next three from this point and only draw the last match). We also had a run in the middle of the season where we only lost twice in 25 league games - I've no recollection of that at all.

And this is exactly why fans of the older generation are not content with the current situation. We should be a premier league team. We just never built on or capitalised as a club on those moments we had.

Parachute payments were peanuts when we came down from Prem, if only had we hung in their a few more years.
