Popular Post Since 1971
25 year's ago today, first game of the season away at Newcastle. Pleat's third and last season. Hirsty made half a dozen appearances in his last season for us before moving to Southampton. Di Canio's debut, late on as sub if I remember correctly. He came on wearing gold coloured boots (this was before the days of multi-coloured footwear) and immediately ragged the Newcastle right back, went back to beat him again, and I thought he'll do for me. Turned out to be as mad as a box of frogs of course. Programme extracts excluding the Newcastle related pages - which are mainly propaganda about being the best fans in the world and some striker of theirs who got injured in a pre-season friendly. Looks like this is the time the obsession with statistics started in football. Carbone scored a lovely overhead kick, we wore orange and had O'Neil Donaldson up front. Patrick Blondeau didn't last long did he? He seemed very unsuited to the burly burly of English football. And I'm not sure about the advert headline for Newcastle Falcons. Maybe the Carry On films scriptwriter was the programme editor. Geordies eh? 10 1 1

HopefulOwl
How did he shoe-horn Whittingham, Carbone, Hirst, Booth and Di Canio into a forward line....
Popular Post Django
Those were the days Looking at the back of that programme and I still remember every name from that Newcastle side like I did most clubs back then I’d struggle to name you 5 Newcastle players now Shows how much I’ve fallen out of love with the game I suppose 13

Got to agree he was as mad as a bag of frogs, but wow what a player
WimJunk
Best game of that season was 3-3 at home to Liverpool. Michael Owen's hat trick was electric.
elyowl1
One hell of a Newcastle squad still cant quite believe they didn't win the League, imo better than Man Utds just didnt have the refs on their team often enough.

I don't keep up with the world football, just Sheffield Wednesday (for my sins!). But I think it has more to do with not being a young lad anymore. In the days of my youth, the passion for football in the adults around me clearly didn't compare to that of my peers. We get older. "Real life" takes the front seat. And at the end of the day, what makes football special isn't the game itself, but the wider community it creates. 1
Luke
Best striker I've seen for us Wilson bottled it and the rest is history 5

It's like Wednesday are a separate entity to the world of football. I might check Google for results. That's it. Wednesday though, it's always there.... somewhere.
Markowski77
Those were the days Di Canio was just unbelievable to watch, I remember at the Dell last minute and he went on to round the keeper about 3 times it was like time stood still

Inspector Lestrade
And its Di Canio on the ball, past one, past another defender, beats a third and lines it up perfectly for Booth, Booth shoot, are you there? The defender collects the ball.
Southie_Owl
Feel a bit emotional seeing that and reminiscing to those times again. I was 15 and it was a great time to be a Wednesday fan with Di Canio and Carbone at the club. Hopefully we’ll have an amazing player like PDC at the club again someday soon.
swfc4_sufc0
Overall though, we were only going in one direction with that squad.
Mike Bassett
Patrick Blondeau is now more famous for being the father of the woman once dubbed the most beautiful girl in the world.... Great genes, terrible fullback

I suppose you’re right I think there’s too much of a quick turnover of players these days too Also I’m going to sound like a proper old man here, but there isn’t many characters in the game. To me the PL is just full of a bunch of well drilled athletes. All pace power, possession and passing it about the back and not much entertainment Back in the 90’s every club had flair players who genuinely could get you out of your seat, players like Henry, Bergkamp, Waddle, Di Canio, LeTissier, Ginola, Kinkladze, Asprilla, Cantona, Zola, Giggs, Beckham, etc and then the out and out goalscorer’s like Shearer, Cole Fowler and Owen. Imo the 90’s was the golden age of football. Now ( Wednesday aside) I can take it or leave it 2
