Since 1971
35 years ago today. I remember we won, think it was 3-0. It was warm and we wore the new, mostly white, kit. According to a later Wednesday programme, the crowd was 8,700 and raised £20,000 for the games. This was the real start of the restrictions on Wilko that led to him leaving 12 mths later. As some of the text hints at, good players leaving and only recruiting Steve McCall, Gary Owen and Greg Fee due to wage structure and limit on transfer budget. Anyone remember the World Student Games? 4
Manwë
I remember the Games, I had a ticket for the whole thing but as I was at school during the day so I just went to Don Valley every evening to watch the Athletics. I was at both the opening and closing ceremonies. We've had a good legacy from the games, even now. Shame about Don Valley though.
bradowl
I've no memories of this game whatsoever. I remember that season well enough, falling attendances, a few heavy defeats, 6-1 at Leicester during a massive injury crisis. Though personally a big fan of Howard some fans were starting to question his style of football. Big mistake letting him go and then replacing him with Peter Eustoce who I think only managed one league win during his time in charge.

elyowl1
Looking at that team on paper not too bad, just needed a better centrehalf than May.
mrgund
I remember going to the World Student Games, went on quite a few of the event days and also the closing ceremony. If I remember correctly I was walking about with people like Sally Gunnell, Roger Black, Steve Backley,, and erm some others. Always remember they were giving out free stuff and I came back with so many sporting items. Also, they were giving away athletics cards in the style of the pro-set football cards that were popular back then. Equivalent today would be the Topps cards. Had so many packs I would spend hours unwrapping them all when i got back. Strange memory to have. This was the only time the WSG have been held in the UK. Also, we (the city of Sheffield) are still paying for it until 2024, at which point it will have cost nearly £700 million.

Sova
'Gone for ever are the days when Sheffield Wednesday can be referred to as a "sleeping giant".' Well, thank goodness for that, eh! That 'all under careful police scrutiny and control' line reads horribly given what was to happen, though.
