Not the Top 20 - where we finish?

Recommended Posts

No spoilers

Always worth listening to the Not the Top 20 podcast, and especially the pre-season 1-24 Positions episode.

Just listened - they are very positive about us. Won’t spoil it by saying where they predict we’ll finish.

VERY positive about our transfer window.

Enjoy.

Go on, spoil it.

“If you don’t wish to know the result, look away now.”

1. Owls

2. Ipswich

They raved about our acquisitions, Smith and Ihiekwe in particular. Said to get the main striker and main CB from a promoted side was great business. They think our CBs are excellent and that our midfield is really strong. Of course they love Bannan. They stressed how strong we were in the second half of the season.

Much more besides. Well worth a listen.

Can't be bothered to type the whole list but last season they predicted as follows (actual result in brackets)

2. Ipswich (11)

3. Charlton (13)

4. Lincoln (17)

5. Wycombe (6)

6. Rotherham (2)

11. Wednesday (4)

I thought they had Rotherham to win the league last season?

Ipswich were definitely the underperforming side of last season. I have no clue if they will come good this campaign but you’d think they would improve at least.

I’ve been very pleased with our transfer window so far and am genuinely surprised at the amount of negative views on here. There are always the obvious posters with their negative outlooks but overall the reception of our signings has been quite muted. Not sure if it’s people being cautious or not wanting to tempt fate.

I think we are going to be terrific this season and it looks like at least some people outside of Sheffield agree…

I think it's quite a strange feeling starting as actual favourites for once, and I reckon a lot of us don't know quite how to handle it. When we've been the favourites in the past I think it's been a mixture of lazy betting due to the size of the club, and the bookies protecting themselves due to the potential.

This is the first time I can remember since I've been alive, that I think we'll win the league.

It's probably quiet on here because there's not much to complain about at this stage. Even the shirts have been released in a timely manner.

Can't argue with Wednesday and Ipswich being the obvious contenders. Logic suggests we'll be better than last season, as we ought to be able to avoid the early-season experimentation and crippling injury list which cost us last time round. That should put us right in the thick of the race for top 2.

Ipswich improved as the season went, and seem to have strengthened well during the summer. So you have to fancy they'll be up there.

From the rest, I fancy Bolton. They're a team on the up with a good pedigree and a decent manager. And their form in the second half of last season was nearly as strong as ours. I don't know much about their summer transfer dealings but if they've had a good close season I expect they'll be challenging.

Derby feel a bit like ourselves last year - a young manager trying to rebuild a huge club following a traumatic relegation, and basing it mostly on experienced players from a higher league. I think they'll take some time to get going as they'll be a big scalp, but if they can get a good start they might push for automatic. Otherwise I think it'll be play-offs at best for them.

Imagine Peterborough, Plymouth, Wycombe and Oxford will all be up there. Don't fancy Portsmouth as much as some - Hirst, Bazunu and Harness are three major losses for them.

Bristol City were in L1 for ages - it’s a really difficult league to escape from and we missed out in the play off final under Danny Wilson one season. We finally got promotion under Steve Cotterill who, surprisingly was sacked just 6 months later.

Having experienced a full season in L1 you guys know what to expect and there’ll be other ‘big’ clubs all after the same promotion goal and it’ll be really tough but if I were a betting man I’d have a tenner on Sheffield Wednesday to achieve automatic promotion.

As always I’ll be looking out for your results and good luck for the season,
