How did Sheffield Wednesday fans cope in the 1920's/30's??

Recommended Posts

Just been watching some footage of Sheffield Wednesday playing back in the 1920's

How on earth did Wednesday fans cope given the shirts were grey and white, the ball was white, and the pitch was a light grey?

Must have been a nightmare knowing which team was which

No need for Pathe news ! There was always room to squeeze a few more in. If you couldn't get; The goals roar could be heard in a circumfrance stretching from Grenoside to Crookes.

I know this is tongue in cheek but my eldest genuinely asked me when she was about 6 if they didn't have colour in the 'olden days' because all she had ever seen was black and white films and photos from that era.

I used to ask Dad the same question when I was a nipper.

Any evidence to say you was wrong?

He and Mum were born in 1921, Grandma was born in 1890.  All them said everything was in colour from their earliest memories.

Okay, I'll bite. Old paintings, archives of old clothing, flags etc. The Sistine Chapel and... old Wednesday strips. Please say we didn't use to have black and white stripes 😬.

Incidentally, hardly anybody smiled on old photographs, because the exposures took a few seconds and everyone had to concentrate on not moving a muscle. Nightmare with kids.

Over the years they have coloured in the paintings.

Oh heck... you're winning me over. It would explain why dinosaurs used to be grey, then became a sort of muddy green and have now gone into full-on carnival mode.
