MF TAZ
I keep thinking about this, and the homophobia and dead slaves.... how can I watch this WC?
Pablo Bonvin
It was the same with Russia in 2018. Shouldn’t have watched that either but football has such a draw over the public that FIFA know most of the general public will “forget about” the issues and watch it regardless. Human nature. I’m not saying it’s right but that’s the way of the world unfortunately,
OxonOwl
It is difficult. I understand the sentiment but any individual not watching will not achieve much more than having a clearer conscience
Popular Post ANDY
But if each country had the gonads to not send their teams there’d be just Qatar playing their second team. 10
Popular Post BowOwl
Simply put it's the teams responsibility, not the fans. E.G England - We've heard speech upon speech upon protest, about different issues from the players & manager (and TV) about how our fans should act/respect. Yet here is the perfect chance to put those meaningless empty gestures where it counts, and refuse to take their earned place in a competition held in a country that goes against everything England claim to support. So far not a peep, and no TV company has once put them on the spot about it. All it takes is a single question from a reporter to Southgate - "Currently you all make a statement before every game about racism, let alone other statements about inclusive women's football & equal pay. Why are you taking part and supporting an event hosted by a country that clearly supports racism, homophobia, slavery and sexism?" Until they practice what they preach, I can't support England at this event or any other. Hypocrites living in their own world and have no care about pride of playing for their country and fans. 10 1

HighworthOwl
It would be brilliant if all the bigger nations stay home. Even better if all nations stayed home. But we know football has no morals so it will go ahead as normal and be hyped up. BBC will send hundreds of reporters like they always do and brush over the whole thing. And then it will all roll on to the next circus in 4 years, or 2 depending on kick backs getting ever bigger and watering down the quality.

matthefish2002
I am sure Gareth Southgate and the FA will be having meetings to discuss how to handle the inevitable questions about Qatar human right records when it comes up But I get the feeling it will all come across as they are more motivated by image and making sure they is less disruption to the teams preparation rather than any genuine concern. If they don't make a proper stand in someway even going as far as refusing to play in Qatar than the whole issue of taking the knee, rainbow laces and support for women's football will come across as insincere and opportunistic.
i used to be sc_owl
I will not be watching. I know others who are saying the same. The fact that the FA hasn’t boycotted the competition says everything you need to know about their commitment to equal rights.

beswetherick
I’d love to say I won’t watch any of it out of principle… but wall to wall footy on terrestrial tv in the cold, dark winter months will be difficult to ignore altogether
matthefish2002
World Cups should be in the Summer. Even putting aside the problems with Human Rights we know that the main reason it is in Qatar is because they greased enough palms. The whole thing stinks. 1

The question will never be asked. Journalists need access which will be denied to anyone likely to ask. It will be like the F1 Abu Dhabi safety car incident last season, they all just never mention it.

I think it might be like the 2008 Beijing Olympics when the explanations were 'We hope our presence here we give publicity to the human right abuses'

Ever the pessimist
Re. the possibility of tricky interview questions, has anyone seen the questions to Poulter and Westwood about playing for Saudi cash? Was great to see them squirm. Can only hope such questions are put to the football contingent.
