Howard Wilkinson was pretty much unknown when appointed but actually way ahead of his time. In 1983/4 Mick Lyons said Wilkinson would manage England one day. He was right of course. Wilkinson improved fitness no end, through professionalism, Alan Smith's physio work and training. It got immediate results with average to good players at that level.15 yrs later Wenger did something similar at Arsenal with international superstar players and also got immediate results. Wenger got quite a bit more positive coverage for it. Roberto Carlos developed the attacking full back role in the mid nineties. Conte and Tuchel have developed the full back into winger option recently into team tactics. They get worshipped in the media for innovation and adaptive, "total" football using full backs costing £30 million each. Howard Wilkinson used five at the back with overlapping full backs becoming wingers. He did it with Mel Sterland, Nigel Worthington and Lawrie Madden. The majority of the media called it "long ball kick and rush". Man City and Liverpool have had huge success in recent years using the pressing game, winning the ball back as soon as possible, defending from the front. Pressuring the opposition into errors. The media call it Mentality Monsters, heavy metal football and the High Press. Howard Wilkinson used the pace of Bannister, Varadi and Marwood to close down defenders, pressure them into mistakes, defend from the front. It worked very well, it also led to success. I remember really good European cup winning teams like Liverpool and Tottenham just not being able to deal with it at the time, good defenders looking baffled and harrased on the pitch. The media called it The Percentage Game, kick and rush, football by numbers etc. Howard Wilkinson played percentages with very limited resources at Wednesday. When given resources at Leeds, he had massive success. He is still the last Englishman to win the title. Nah, the best managers are smart and they would adapt. If you listen / watch any interviews with his ex players, it wasn't fear that motivated them it was damn good management. Not that Wilkinson, Charlton and Atkinson were not good managers but they were from a different era. Rollockings, boozy nights out were an integral parr of the culture than which have gone forever. I don't think it was fear more sheer strength of personality and charisma that got the best out of players, plus his assistant Pater Taylor was brilliant at spotting players others hadn't. Clough techniques wouldn't work in modern football and in todays social media world he would have to be a lot more diplomatic then was his nature.
