We can't have another Hirst or Waddle till we're in the Premier League

But for now we can still sign players like Jeffers, Van Aken, izzy Brown or Sow, so we got a lot to look forward to

The thing with those players (maybe excluding Sow), is that they were reasonably expensive.  poo, but expensive.

Why can't we buy cheap poo, or spend on something quality.

We'd discover them, they'd have a cracking half a season and then clubs would smash irresistible bids in that we couldn't turn down and even if Channers said "NOT FOR SALE" he'd have to let them go as they'd want to go on and upwards into the Premier League etc

Wednesday wouldnt do that. They would run their 1 year contract down and let them go on a free. The Wednesday way

We don’t develop players any more anyway. There’s no pathway from the youth set up to the first team, we’re not even picking up many released young players from PL teams and developing them in our first team. Our whole set up - our plan - is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

It would be nice to give Barnsley another $250,000 for the next David Hirst but unfortunately with scouting networks, computers and large academies at the bigger clubs, they get to the talent first and can entice them in.  Smaller clubs have to hope that they can find a gem locally or develop someone who is under the radar.

Fairly understandable that We can't bring in players of that caliber if We are not playing in top league.

But even more than this, We never seem to gamble on bringing in young players that could potentially develop in players of such quality.

We are paying for average players and until We change our transfer policy We wont see much better put on Wednesday shirt for a long time.

When We tried to do this in 3 seasons we signed Brunt, Whelan and Simek. Then all out of sudden We changed our transfer policy and started signing poo .

I mean, you’d still take it, wouldn’t you? 6-9 months of Hirst-level quality on the pitch followed by a decent transfer fee? Nice problem to have.

Followed by months and months of people acting like jilted lovers and saying ‘e wer crap anyway’

We've got a great asset in Cadamateri hope we don't do the wrong thing and let him go

THIS is crucial, if we want another star player ever again

Totally agree.

We seem to have knee jerk signings to do a short term job.

Long term plan required bringing on youngsters for the future.

Its a different world to the 90's, the big 6 scouting systems are everywhere.

The money is immense it is felt that the first billion pound footballer is already alive

In 2022 Man Utd or Man City would have bought Hirst from Barnsley or before he got to Barnsley loaned him out and increased his value.

Just been looking through the favourite players thread and seeing so much love (of course) for Hirst, Waddle, DiCanio and co.

The greatest players in our lifetime pretty much

But if you think about it, even if we did stumble upon a player of such talent and skill and excitement we'd simply not be able to keep hold of them in this league or the one above.

We'd discover them, they'd have a cracking half a season and then clubs would smash irresistible bids in that we couldn't turn down and even if Channers said "NOT FOR SALE" he'd have to let them go as they'd want to go on and upwards into the Premier League etc

I think the best we can hope for is 6 to 9 months of a top top player performing magic - until we're up in the top flight

True, but perhaps just one season of either goals goals goals, or assists or opening up a defence, might, just might get us promoted. Plus the big money that would come in for such a player.

win win.

Doesn't have to be. Since Chansiri took over We managed to keep our best players at the club.

Bannan, Forestieri, Westwood, Lee, Hooper, etc... all stayed with the club as long as We wanted them to. I believe that keeping such a good players here while Premier League clubs showed interest in them is something DC proved himself capable of.

Also, there is a good chance that by finding that "gem of a player" it would be enough to galvanize us, create atmosphere and opportunity to push for Premier League. Other clubs did it so can We.
